It's very 2010's memey, I can't really play defense for the writing or story at large. I enjoyed the pissed off old men characters, but I really just like the movement. It's like a better Saints Row 4.

Yeeeeah, but there was almost no reason to use guns, on top of no reason to really use cars. I say a better Saints Row 4 in terms of still making guns the viable option. In SR4, you have powers that get lower and lower cooldowns. But really the writing is just as memey, the Truman show bit after the jokey whitehouse bit was all just as juvenile.

I'll concede by saying, Prototype and Spiderman 2 are the kings that also utilize the systems of previous games they borrow from (Hulk for Prototype, other Spidermans for 2).

Current feeling is that both the game itself & the soundtrack are considerably better than either of the previous two (although I did like Eternal as well) and that it's in general much more in line with what I would've expected from a Doom reboot. Unsure of how atypical a reaction that is. I always distantly respected the nuDooms for their willingness to be so different from one another despite being nowhere near as head over heels for them as most, so I'm glad to now have one that I do gel with from the start.

That's literally at the very start of the game. The writing gets better as the game goes on and it's filled with references to the old games and actually give some backstory to some characters. It's surprisingly well written for a jokey game and actually has serious moments sprinkled around.

I mean, the entire premise alone along with the new gameplay quirks are what betrays Saints Row as a GTA clone for me. The writing was at its peak in 2, 3 had some self referential jabs at being a corporate sellout, but did it during a time when normiedom was at its loudest with dubstep. On top of being the game that killed Johnny.
The idea that you're in a simulation, the silly jabs at Mass Effect through surface level romance options, the flying missions, is far removed from the gang stuff you did prior.
At least the 3rd kept faction based gangs, had a reason for you to drive, and the goofy stuff like roided clones at least added to the gangs.

Your only enemy in 4 is aliens, gun are viable enough, but you're mostly going to abuse freeze and just sprinting into enemies, or throwing fireballs. You can clear buildings and glide around like Prototype, there's no reason to have a favorite vehicle on the ground or in the air. PLUS aliens instagib cars with their abilities.

It can be funny, I won't be a hardass, I'm just saying Sunset is about the same level of silly as 3/4. The soundtrack is worse, you're not given a radio sadly.

Saints Row 4 completely gave up on being a GTA clone, it's meant to be a super hero game, hence why it's better than 3 which is a boring GTA clone with shitty humor.

I'm not judging it as a GTA clone, I'm judging it was a super hero, easy movement open world game, which makes it closer to Sunset Overdrive rather than Saints Row 3.

Sunset Overdrive weapons in general might as well be super powers anyways like the freeze gun and such. You are arguing almost semantics. Only thing Sunset has going for it is the enemy variety and maybe some of the missions that take more advantage of the more interesting movement options, but even those were dime a dozen at the time.

I think how it handles movement is more rewarding, where as SR4 is more freeform (gliding, wall running, the amount of vertical and horizontal distance mid-game leaps give you).
You still have ammo management in SO, and it's more built around the wave based missions, where you're incentivized to kiting and defend objectives.

I argue semantics on the powers, because they make the guns almost useless, where as SO has a badge/amp system that puts the powers in the guns like you said, which I think makes the combat more thought out. Enemies are weak or resistant against certain weapons, each weapon type (single shot/fully auto) have badges that level-up along with weapons of choice.

That, plus how chaining grinding with wall-running and other moves, while shooting is a more rewarding feeling. SR4 might as well should be a Just Cause reboot, with all the redundancies of being a series that had driving.

>How did I feel
After fucking around in the training room and looking up the manual, it's high moments are high. I like how the defensive options like jumping off the wall, deflecting or reversing grapples are a thing. But it gave me some Bouncer flashbacks with how easy you can get ragdoll wombo combo'd by AI.
I enjoyed the gimmick encounters (the Karate guy early on that acts like a tutorial, then the later mission where you fight him and two of his goons, the mexican guy that has a full on combo).
I did not like how you regained health (the potions you had to pick-up and drink), but it's a fun learning process.

I'm also playing DOOM TDA and idk how to feel about it, the addition of sprint was a big mistake imo, it made the game too vertical. Also the weapons are all all-rounders so using your entire arsenal is not even necessary, not even in DOOM 2016 you could get away just using a single gun the entire game.

I wouldn't call it a bad game and props to ID for changing the formula each game, but for me TDA is definitely the clear third place in the nuDOOM saga

>it's a fun learning process.
Yeah, there's a lot more depth to it than is readily apparent at first, and getting good at it felt pretty satisfying. It was nice to slowly go from getting repeatedly curbstomped by Golem to being able to humiliate him even when playing as weaker characters. I eventually S-ranked all the missions, though there was one in particular that took quite a while, since it seemed like you needed to both use a lw-ranked character and defeat a large number of enemies extremely quickly. I also played around a bit with the hidden multiplayer mode.

XIII - I enjoyed it. Didn't blow me away but was a fun game to go through
Sonic Riders - I assumed this was shovelware, I was wrong. Really enjoyed it, heard the sequel dials it back unfortunately
Dishonored - Tried it a few years back and it didn't click for me, but it did this time. Actually preferred non-lethal but the last level in high chaos was so much better. Still need to do the DLC.
Far Cry Primal - Every year or so I get the urge to play a Far Cry game and it was this one's turn. I didn't expect much but it was actually better than I thought it would be.
Megaman Zero 4 - Zero isn't my favourite Megaman series, and I don't think 4 is my favourite Zero games, but it was decent. I can't believe they killed him for real
Airblade - Shouldn't really count this because it was just getting a couple of high scores to fully complete my childhood save but it's one of those games that probably isn't great but I'll always love out of nostalgia
Super Metroid - Deserves all of the hype it gets
Fallout 3 GOTY - I'll never understand people who go ape for these games, but it does have a weird charm to it. Mothership Zeta is the buggiest piece of shit I've ever played though.
Sonic Battle - I don't know if I was just playing it wrong but the gameplay didn't do it for me. I do have a soft spot for 2000's Sonic thought so it was nice seeing that era again. Final boss disappointed me because I was sure I saw a YouTube video of someone using Super Sonic when I was a kid which apparently can't happen
>Currently playing
Crash Bandicoot 4 - Chipping away at full completion. I actually like it but I feel like the only reason the N. Verted gems exist is for padding out the game because they felt like they couldn't justify charging for one game when they sold 3 with the N. Sane trilogy (and 2 with Nitro Fuelled in a way).
Balatro - I do a run or two every night, going for gold stakes, I do get burnt out sometimes and leave it for a week.
