MMOs aren't as novel anymore with online games and social media being so prevalent. Despite the industry being magnitudes larger than it was 20 years ago, MMOs aren't nearly as popular. MMOs also take a lot of time, money, and effort to create and maintain, so the only ones that are around right now are 10-20 years old coasting off old popularity, or a popular IP. MMOs being expensive to make is made even worse with how expensive game development has been getting in general, so the only people making these games anymore are already massive companies (Blizzard, Amazon) or MMO companies in Asia who just make shitty games in general. It doesn't help that MMOs as a genre has more or less been replaced by gacha.
Whether you like or hate the company, I honestly think the Riot MMO is the final chance for the genre, which is sad to say since it's in development hell.
