you're right that it was not an outlier, 3DS launched with DS mode exploits, DS launched with memory manipulation relatively early, the DSi and Wii had incredibly rudimentary encryption techniques that weren't hard to derive, but it defintely should not have been as trivial to mod the Switch as it ended up being. that's to say nothing of the fact that the method used to mod the system was already well documented by the gpu manufacturer.
the Switch generation is where Nintendo actually stepped up its security by quite a large factor, and to this day its actual software is relatively airtight and bug free. yes, this includes the basic day 1 ROP on the switch 2. the only useful software exploit in the switch 1's lifespan was browserhax for version 4.1 and under and things stayed that way for 5-6 years, even after hardware revisions would've made a software exploit very attractive to modders.
