I know the whole evil Sage future with Silver went viral recently, but do we really think Sega has any plan to do something like that with her?

No. Metal Sonic is a melee focused enforcer. One that is par with Sonic.

To counter Sage, Sonic would need some sort of AI on his side. Maybe in the shape of some animal friend, like I dunno...a Lynx maybe? Just spitballing here.

No. If anything Sage complements Eggman and Metal Sonic so now Team Sonic and Team Eggman have three main characters without Eggman having to use Cubot and Orbot.

It really depends on how they characterize them in their relationship. I think the best route is Sage sees Metal Sonic as a brother but Metal Sonic is just filled with envy, jealousy, and just has a general hatred for her similar to Eggman.
She is quite literally everything he aspired to be and more. Becoming the new Heir of the Eggman Empire without needing to resort to betrayal, free to use the Egg-Net however she desires, she has free will and free reign but chooses to continue to stay with the incompetent Doctor.
I feel like he would just think "Why?" when it comes to everything about Sage, to the point of anger.
Sadly I think we'll only see that relationship explored in the IDW Comics at least until Movie 4.

He led the Resistance and knocked the Phantom Ruby off of Infinite in Forces. There just haven't been that many opportunities, most of the cast is unused, even Shadow wasn't in Frontiers. What exactly do you want him to do that he isn't doing? He's not some tortured wandering soul in a bad future, he's a hero that protects the peace and enjoys the little things.

Metal doesn't really have a character beyond that, the closest you'll get is a horrible obsession with destroying Sonic (it's his prime directive) and only really denigrating his creator in light of a previous failure, and at most pragmatic, Metal being a dark reflection of Sonic himself like in the OVA. Otherwise Metal works succinctly as an implication that Eggman absolutely can fart out as many metal duplicates of Sonic as he pleases and Metal Sonic is the magnum opus.

Eh, his reputation is mostly diminished by characters like Shadow and even Knuckles getting even more development in recent years. Metal Sonic is currently a has-been, people often talk about the chaos fight in Sonic Gens showing how far Sonic has come as he doesn’t need Super Sonic to beat him or whatever and that’s a whole topic for another day, but the Shadow vs. Neo Metal Fight was especially that since Shadow’s doom powers made Neo Metal pretty trivial. The strongest Metal Sonic has ever been is now just a punching bag for a moderately powered up shadow, who Sonic probably could’ve beaten anyway. I know I’m doing dumb powerscaling shit here but seriously, Metal Sonic is just a nuisance more than anything. In the new racing game, Crossworlds, I don’t even see people play as Metal that much. I’ve seen more Silvers and Blazes than Metal Sonic which says a lot, really.

I don't know how I feel about Sage. I'm currently not a fan, but I am aware of my "recency bias" against her.
On the other hand I think Trump should designate the people who ask for IDW characters to be in the games as Threats against Humanity. Which means kill on sight orders for all Military, Police or Lawful Citizens. If possible, neutralize non-lethally FemScourge fans as they deserve to be further tortured for their sins.

Metal sonic is just one of the many robot sonic clones that exist nobody even truly cares about what he can and cant do you could always powerscale him up and down and give him different tools..
But he is by far the best design of that idea and will never be surpassed in that regard which is why sega will keep using him forever.
