Its been confirmed since zero mission where you had to crawl around for a bit with out the power suit

It's a skintight suit and a pistol vs a full suit of armor, eighty beams and missles. Yeah, it's weaker.

She hasn't done SHIT in her zero suit. Nada. Nothing. In Zero Mission, she can't beat a single enemy. She can stun them, using her gun. Remove her gun, and she's completely useless and defenseless.

Without the Power Suit, Samus only has superhuman athleticism to her name (thanks to the Chozo training her and giving gene therapy or whatever), and that's simply not enough to comfortably take on Space Pirates, which is why the Zero Suit gameplay segment is spent running from them. This is not contentious. If you want to point at Smash Bros, you have to remember that the entire concept of SSB is basically fanfiction wankery of "what do you think would happen if X and Y fought".
