If you play stolen games meant to be played on a console you didn't beat it. You especially didn't beat it if you play stolen console games and run them at a higher resolution and faster frame rate. You only beat console games if you play them on original hardware.

I have gone through games without save states, but some of the saving system are fucking ass. Like finding save rooms or specific part of the story you can't save because story reasons or story puts you in a destroyed town so you can't save just yet.

A faster, smoother frame rate is a speed hack. Original hardware is the only way to beat a console game.

I often save state after a manual save
or before doing something really tedious like star ocean 3 mine carts

It spares the work of resetting the game or trying a stage all the way from beginning sometimes, but I still use battery/SRAM saves/emulated MCs in parallel btw
SRAM saves are useful when catching 2 of 3 HGSS Legendary catdogs on pure effort and RNG behavior; if you use savestates, you can read how the RNG will behave the same way, and they will flee (if not using Mean Look or bringing a Dugtrio) or Roar at you, or when you enter the Dark Cave through the Blackthorn side (a Wobbuffet can rape your whole party if you don't OHKO them first, as they are like the Urchins of Tales of Phantasia)

Really, really, really good debugging.
The OpenMSX debugger does things that not even C++ debuggers do like running the code backwards.
Also it's easier to integrate with the level editor.
