1 is a funny game in the sense that so much of it was written before they saw what game they were making. There are also parts of the main story where they refer to the companions on their labels instead of names, like "The Krogan" instead of "Wrex" when talking to Tali on Virmire.
And there's entire portions of the game that were written thinking the main story was gonna be something different than it is. A lot of the game got cut as well. An entire planet as expansive as the Noveria portion, written by the same writer, was removed but it's mentioned in almost every preview and trailer for the game.
