Buying something meant for entertainment and keeping it shrinkwrapped IE never played with is fucking gross.
"Toys" should be graded on the stories the owner associates with them not in their physical perfection because that's the actual value of the object itself.

Burning them is one thing. The better option is opening them all up and also using a hole puncher on the case.

You dont get it. You probably dont collect and just armchair criticize. But if release is limited like a LE or Limited run type release, you either buy on release date, pay msrp and store it for when you can get to it (during this time it may end up on a photograph posted on /v/). The other option is buying it scalped for 2x the price minimum when your ready to play. So as much as shrink wrap gives you the ick, its more of an indicator buyer thinks ahead and would rather spend less at the cost of having digicucks hurl insults at him

Rule of Rose is only rare in its PAL edition cause of the idiotic controversy in EU which made it so it only stayed on shelves for a very limited time before being retired in most EU countries, and the UK release was completely canceled never making it to shelves, making te UK version the rarest and most sought after

The NTSC version is only "rare" due to the lack of commercial success, but it's actually not more uncommon than any other game with a similar lack of success, and the only reason it ever got up in price is cause of people selling/buying it thinking this NTSC version was as rare as the PAL or UK one.

People that buy sealed and graded games have no genuine interest in actually playing them. It's either a useless decoration to waste space in a shelf or something they intend to flip for profit later. No one actually cares about PAL ps2 copies due to the 50hz fucking with a lot of games (though some games give you a toggle). So before we even get to why a specific title is rare in the uk, uk titles just dont register on a collectors radar unless your given up on owning the NTSC copy.

Is the UK copy rarer? Sure, but its a inferior version

They've also figured out a way to get you if you just write yourself a check for a billion dollars, deposit it, and then try and cash out a billion dollars.

for the game itself, you're 100% right obviously, people who are after Rule of Rose specifically, they do not care about playing the game, it being 50hz is 100% irrelevant for the collectable value of the item, just its rarity and reason for rarity does.

you have to understand that collecting games as a way to play them or obtain the best version of them(like you said, NTSC copies over PAL, complete or reissued versions with fixed bugs over the original releases, etc) is an entire different world than collecting games cause of their rarity, people collect games for their rarity 99% do not give a fuck if this or that version is better, rarity is all that matters.

Downloading a rom of the internet to play on a modded console gives you the same exact game-play experience as playing the same exact game but you payed 1000+$ for it.
And possibly an even better experience if you use emulator.

My "collection" is the stuff I had as a kid and it just sits in a box. The consoles themselves are the only valuable thing because of the hardware. Cobbling them together went well but I accidentally ruined the camera cable. Fuck.
That and two R4s. That's it.

Outside of DS/3DS being the only sources of handhelds with resistive touchscreens, there's no reason for anyone to buy/own a "real" system anymore or own real games, especially in the context of a collection.
>your collection will eventually degrade, either battery failure, crumbling label adhesives or disc rot
>you're paying randos (scalpers) for the games and consoles, so none of the money goes to the devs anyway, even in the cases where you'd want them to get the money
>consoles themselves get corrosion, worn slots, yellowing/crumbling plastic, worn motors, crumbly belts, cracking solder, and worn lasers
>you're constantly at risk of a fire/flood/ex/child/infestation wiping your entire collection (hell, just humidity does it, both too little and too much are bad long-term)
>most game/console values don't even outpace inflation, outside of a select few uber-rare games and weirdly specific hardware revisions

Just for my own personal satisfaction.

Correction: one DSi had a working camera, but the plastic lenses were fucked, the other DSi had a camera with a very corroded ribbon cable.
I put the good plastic lenses (covers?) on the final DSi, then put in the good camera cable only for one of the cameras to get jammed and rip out when I readjusted it.
I mean it's not like I'll ever use the cameras, but I just don't like leaving the DSi "half-fixed", I want everything on it to work.
NGL I should've kept that corroded one and tried to clean it up. Too late now though, I guess.

Also I guess I should mention I own a physical copy of Meteos, but I just play the digital version instead so it's more of a slot cover than anything else.

Thanks. Most of these were acquired as I grew up, though some were bought after the fact. (luckily, I got most of the retro stuff before Covid hit and made it a scalper's market)

Are you me? Basically the only games I held onto were my Fatal Frame games and personal favourites. I was literally never going to play the PS2 .hack/Persona games ever again realistically so why would I want them sitting around collecting dust when I could sell them and buy something I'd actually use.
