Are people getting dumber.
Fallout 1 is too clunky for zoomers? it’s literally the most intuitive easiest classic pc game that pretty much leads you exactly where you need to go to beat the game.
You literally just click on the picture of the gun, and click on the guy.
We are not playing wizardry or ultima lol

to be fair the inventory/barter screen and using the drop down menu on items is pretty awkward.
but most of the game is very smooth especially with hotkeys.

I only found the water chip by accident. Before that I got taken to the bad guy's lair and spent a good hour trying to escape before realizing it wasn't possible. I got stuck trying to deal with the Brotherhood. The guys at the door told me to go to a big pit and when I went there I found nothing to interact with so I assumed they were assholes that lied to me to get me to fuck off, but now I have no clue what to do or where to go.

Sorry for my ignorance but what does "skill trap" mean, is it where you think you're getting something good so you dump all your stats into it but it's actually pretty bad for what it's offering?

pretty much. there's a of skills with little to no application (traps, throwing, gambling) that if anything should only be supplemental minor skills
Anonymous No.723165320 [Report]
>>723164783
I would say only 33% of skills are useless. Definitely some trimming should have happened but im sure they were in the mindset of its the 90s so we need skills for a lot of adventure game situations
Like traps is the biggest offender but even a lot of the bad skills have niche uses like getting a high doctor so you can take living anatomy which gives +5 damage to all attacks including every bullet in your burst fires
As long as you have 9-10 agility and you eventually put like 3 levels worth of points into energy or big weapons you can clear the game with relative ease

Fallout is too clunky for zoomers not because we got dumber, but because we got smarter. There's a demand for more engaging, skill-based, technologically advanced mechanics that old games simply cannot provide
Anonymous No.723165446 [Report] >>723165646 >>723165898

Basically. In Fallout specifically the first two that come to mind are gambleing and thrown weapons. The former doesn't actually have a lot of spots to use it, and doesn't scale enough that rocking up to one with it maxed out will see enough of a return to feel worth it. The later has very few throwing weapons, all throwable grenades, that aren't fairly common, and will probably hit the enemy with the blast when even untrained.

Thank you!
Though I do wonder why they put those skills in the game if they're so underutilized, did they plan on making them more viable at some point or was it just purposely meant to trick the player (the trap) Or they just thought having more perks was neat~
Anonymous No.723165930 [Report] >>723166161 >>723167298
They were copying GURPs shit, but forgot to make skills important--or even barely useful. Like, say you invest in Gambling? All you can do with that skill is let you fleece the casino in Junktown...the casino which gets shut down it you side with Richard Dean Anderson. You would've done better just pumping points in to Barter instead of Gambling. Or things like having First Aid and Doctor being two separate skills even though that's realistic.

I mean i think they just made a gambling table and said well you should have a gambling skill to go with it.
Traps exist so a trap skill to go with it
Thrown weapons exist which are pretty alright better than melee so a thrown skill.
I don’t think it was malicious, and its not like the game forces you to grab them.
Im sure 99% of players tagged small guns on their first character because its a no brainer, and everyone swearing about falling into pitfalls is simply overthinking to be dramatic

take for example First Aid
it's just a worse Doctor, which itself is pretty much useless already
off the top of my head Outdoorsman, Traps, Steal, Sneak, and Gambling are also just all wastes of points

>They were copying GURPs shit, but forgot to make skills important--or even barely useful.
99% of GURPS skills are outright useless, so they copied it well. You'd be going crazy if they'd copied the 'Soldier' skill that allows you to do literally anything other skills do except make attacks or defend.
Anonymous No.723166440 [Report]
You can clear this game on the worst possible charater you can make. It simply isn’t that hard and combat is mostly a gear check anyways.
Theirs not a single person on this planet who made characters that only put points into traps, gambling, doctor and complained they weren’t good at combat.
And if that did happen even once and they were genuinely confused.
I mean they’re just stupid lol.

Steal is good, a lot of quests have a way to complete goals with steal.
I never messed with sneak but its probably far from completely worthless.
Doctor is good with burst weapons.
Outdoorsman is really good in 2, can’t remember if it works the same in 1 or even in 1
Traps is bad
Gambling is okay
First aid is bad
Anonymous No.723166683 [Report]
>>723166074
but Gambling is actually a reverse trap, it look useless but with enough point it break the game, and steal is not a great skill but it work, you can't savescum every item you can steal, so if you roleplay as a thief, you have to put some point in it

Trap is a joke in both classic game, how many trap you can disarm, like 2-3 in each game

new vegas combining throwing and traps into just explosives makes the most sense.
Steal and sneak being combined in 3/nv just makes sense
Doctor and first aid being combined just makes sense
I actually really like 3 and nv adding durability so repair is more useful.
Luck should have determined gambling not a whole other stat
Perception should have affected chance to avoid overworld encounters not a whole other stat
Have bladed thrown weapons which are niche be calculated off like agilty or something
Its a first good attempt at a new system they made in like a week sfter they fell thiugh with gurps. As long as you put points into like 1 weapon stat preferably unarmed energy or big guns which pretty much everyone will, you will be fine

There's a casino at the hub too. You can hold down a key and just infinitely win at the slot machine with only a modest gambling investment. Then you can hit the library and read all of the skill book with your winnings. Then you can go grab all of the weapons and armor you want.

i don't think those changes matter much when 3/nv are first person shooters
fallout sonora is a total conversion mod for 2 that rebalances the skills into my ideal. also changes small guns and big guns to one handed/two handed gun skills so it's more like specializing instead of just having a lategame skill

iirc in fallout 1 you don't need any points into gambling, just a luck greater than 5 and the cheapest roulette option (holding 1) will average out into profit

>Perception should have affected chance to avoid overworld encounters not a whole other stat
perception influences random encounters to the extent that it influences your Sequence -- basically how early your turn in a round of combat is.
In 2 (only 2 IIRC), your perception also determines how far you spawn from enemies in a random encounter. Higher your perception, the farther away you'll be.
