i dont mind it if it's an interesting take on the material, since japanese is my first language and if I want the original experience I can just play the japanese version.

some games I prefer the localised version, even. Paper Mario RPG has a really good localisation for example, I think it's funnier and I like the characterisation more

idk I think it works, and "Terra" does sound exotic, which is what they were going for in Japanese, where as "Tina" is not exotic at all for westerners, and Terra and Tina are pretty similar anyway. Of all things to complain about with the Woosley translation, I don't agree that this is one of them.

Nintendo games ALWAYS had shitty meme translation. There isn't a single SNES game that is properly translated.

Reminder they did shit like this because the people translating genuinely hated the shit they had to do, they thought they were going to be the next big hit and make a name for themselves by bringing the next Zelda to the world but instead they realized they were doing the same rpg over and over.
Eventually they just break and try to be funny or "spice up" the generic rpg nonsense.
The sad part is 1/10 it works and someone makes a 'localization hit' like Ghost Stories. And so for years, actually centuries they just never stopped. Once in a while word of such butchering reaches the original author and they have a little spergout but the cycle just repeats.
