Zenogears has so much great stuff going on, but yeah it is drawn out and then completely crippled by the project running out of money completely.

I didn't explain myself, that was a minor point, just further proof of the game's authorial intent. But it's not just about names or vague references. Unlike something like Evangelion, where Anno just throws around flashy terms to create a sense of mystery, in Xenogears everything is actually part of the plot. The references aren't just flavor, they're the backbone of the story. And the thematic ambition, between Jung and Nietzsche, is massive.

Nope. It's still superficial as fuck. Most of the stuff introduced can be easily ignored and adds nothing to the plot. Even the fucking gears are pointless (and that's reinforced by the fact that XG wasn't even supposed to have gears and only got them because Evangelion got popular). You could literally remove Fei's Xenogears from the game and it'd make zero difference to the main plot.

Besides, XG is supposed to be a video game and pretty much none of the thematic shit matters for the gameplay. Compare it to it's contemporary rival, FF7, where materia is the core part of both gameplay and plot (and I don't even like FF7).
If XG was well written, they'd have adapted it as an anime, manga, movie, etc long ago. SE does that all the time.

Adapting a game like this into a mainstream anime is insanely hard and doesn’t make much commercial sense. Square keeps the IP dead because they don’t know what to do with it, it just doesn’t appeal to the mainstream market. It's a game that, like a book, demands your full attention.

what's the issue with the pacing? I haven't played the game yet but most people that complain about pacing issues in games, manga or even TV shows, in fact, just don't understand that characters need to interact with each other to give more meaning to the world, the story and to leave a mark on the player/reader/viewer. the dungeons in disc 2 which have random encounters every 5 steps, along with the most bland fucking combat imaginable, was enough to do me in.

sunk-cost was already activated at this stage so i pushed through. the reveals at the start of disc 2 ruined the entire story for me and it was all downhill from there. i'm glad i finished it just so i can actually talk about it with people here, but holy FUCK was the entire journey not worth my time at all.

Not OP but the problem with Xenogears is after 1.5 years Square games had to be released back then and it was the teams first game. They had a choice to either cut it short or add disc 2 with little gameplay and cram in the rest of the story. So you have things like the Kislev Prison segment taking a huge chunk of the story. It features Rico but Rico barely gets developed and forgotten about after that part of the story so the weird pacing doesnt even always give service to the characters. And then like I said much more important events just get rushed through in the end

However I fucking loved it. If they had time or a chance for a sequel with the same team improving on their flaws it could have been better but they never got a chance. Probably one my favourite JRPG stories of all time.

I find it really fitting the game has a portrait of Elly that Fei could never finish. Its Wabisabi. The team was just too inexperienced and ambitious and it gives you this great underdog feeling. You dont love things because they're perfect

Yes this is a JRPG and you start off in a pastoral JRPG beginner town. But its interesting because you wonder what the fuck the intro was. Everything about Citan is foreshadowing and intrigue. Especially the music box. Then only an hour in which is a short amount of time in a 50+ hour RPG a fucking giant mecha kung fu war happens Master Asia from G Gundam is there a crazy ginger German bitch and you get in the Gundam and kill almost everyone but sadly and unfortunately not Dan then have to go on the run... the intro was great. It was planned to be an utterly gigantic multi-disk RPG. Therefore the first disk starts out slow. Then they ran out of money. So a bunch of plot is squeezed into the end of the first disk, and then unbelievably in a feat that has never been replicated in any game before or since the second disk is largely CHARACTERS SITTING IN A CHAIR EXPLAINING THE PLOT BECAUSE WE RAN OUT OF MONEY TO MAKE A GAME. Those explanations are occasionally interrupted by disconnected dungeons made of whatever they had done when they had to ship the game and a rushed albeit interesting ending.

If you're in the thread and you haven't seen it you should definitely look up what happens with the second disk because it is LUDICROUS how they just completely blatantly ran out of money and decided to just WRITE the game they were going to make in the game!

Chrono Trigger was incredibly polished. Xenogears has all the creativity and interesting ideas of Chrono Trigger, but it's what happens when the development team is halfway done making the game and then is told it needs to be done tomorrow.

whenever people talk about this game they always make it seem like all the problems existed suddenly with the start of disc 2, instead of always being there at various stages throughout disc 1.

I'm in Kislev and about to rescue !notBlanka and I'm not sure if I want to continue, the plot is interesting but it is glacially slow. I can play through a 100hr VN or JRPG no problem but while I really like the production values and am a big mecha guy it's not grabbing me

Because there's more to appreciate in those games. In XG you have the gameplay (annoying), the story (cut my script into a million shards), and the music (KINO) and that's it. The graphics are kind of ugly but serviceable and the writing quality is just ok.

ps1 jrpgs are my favorite games of all time and yeah I agree with OP. Ive tried two different times to get through this game and I got filtered both times. Im sure the story gets great... eventually. the art style and anime scenes are great. dear god that battle system and encounter rate and awful boring dungeons are a hell of a slog though.

I feel the same way about valkyrie profile and bofIV. games i REALLY want to like because they look and sound and amazing and FEEL like games that I should love, but I just fucking cant.
