This game is a masterpiece of atmosphere, sound design and story telling and all the subsequent games failed to reach the bar it set, miserably.

The only game in the franchise that I liked.
The rest turned it all into a joke.

It's parts The Matrix, parts King's Field or pre-Souls really, parts Resident Evil, parts Onimusha, a bit of Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden in there too.

The semi-fixed camera really adds to the atmosphere and how big the levels feel.

The reason it's so far ahead of the rest in terms of aesthetics is that Kamiya genuinely thinks this is the coolest shit. There's no irony or winks and nods, it's 100% his honest idea of what's cool and badass.

Even as a stupid kid I could tell something about DMC1 made it stand out from every other PS2 game. Although in my case I played Viewtiful Joe first, so it was interesting to see my skills in a 2D beat em up transfer over to a 3D hack n slash

3 is better in that exact regard. The sheaksperean tragedy that was the story of Vergil and Dante is just so well done in 3, that i can excuse lesser elements like a worse atmosphere (that isn't bad either, btw).

I tried to play it but the lack of checkpoints is an instant dealbreaker. Too much of a zoomzoom, sorry. I'll stick with 3
