Unironically yes. Fallout 4 makes way more sense when you play as Nate and lean into the backstory of him being a koolaid-drinking fascist grunt. You spend the game shooting up whoever the first guy you see with a semblance of military rank tell you to kill (minutemen missions) and then ditch them to help the brotherhood. Then you can choose to bail on them for the Institute if you want. The game makes less sense if you play intending to role play as someone skeptical of the Old World government.

It makes sense that Nate and Nora would've had to have done some pretty selfish and fucked up things to be rewarded with that nice house in the nice neighborhood as everything is literally going to hell around them. Bethesda has always been torn between the idealistic 50s vision of the future that they want to have occurred and the reality that pre-war America was an absolutely horrible place.

Emil can't write. Unironically it was this game that made me give up on Bethesda. FO3 was clearly a mistake they never intended to make and New Vegas blew their formula out of the water. Out of spite however Bethesda doesn't improve they just try to deliver the exact same experience over and over. And again the writing and presentation is complete garbage. They can't write a romance to save their life let alone an overarching plot. The Institute made zero sense.

In Fallout 4 specifically or the whole series? They were kind of a mixed bag from the beginning but still portrayed as the obviously best faction to work with for the safety of the future wasteland. In Fallout 1, they were patrolling the desert to protect people from super mutants and other junk of their own volition. As the series went on, they came to be portrayed as the "Old World" faction not much different from the Enclave but less cartoonishly evil, while groups like the Rangers or Minutemen filed the gap of the "good guy lawmen" archetype.

They briefly mention stuff like the dwindling resources, riots and corruption fucking everyone over, but it's not what they really want to be doing with the setting. They only mention it at all because it's built into the lore they didn't create. They would rather you take the start of Fallout 4 at face value and have it be the happy idealistic 50s vision of the future and then suddenly boom it's gone.

A lot of FO4s writing seems incomplete. Like instead of fully fleshing out the story, factions, and characters they writers just threw together some basic concept drafts and said "Eh, fuck it. Good enough"

No. They were cautious and isolationist but not the tech-tards they are now.
In 1 they are in the process of breaking out of their isolation and this leads to them spreading across the area in a peaceful expansion where the surrounding populace end up as protectorates. They were also already trading with nearby independent settlements, being totally fine with trading their materials or knowledge to keep infrastructure running.
Way different from the violent tech grubbers 3 portrays them as they were instead focused on confiscation or destruction of legitimately devastating tech, like nukes, viral threats like FEV and bandits getting their hands on the means to industrialize, which they were so good at they pretty much wiped out all organized raiders in the area.

I have 5 modlists of hundreds of mods set up from nuclear winter overhauls to zombie apocalypse, each time thinking it would fix the game. There are mods that remove the god awful NPCs, improve the disastrous factions, replace vanilla weapon which are all trash, make the MC silent, change the dogshit sound track etc but ultimately there are two end games: replace everything but keep the hideous open world and retro future style, or replace the world with new maps like the zone and lose the entire RPG aspect turning into a shitty stalker. The game is not salvageable

It's alright. It's always been alright. Never great, never horrible. Mods have made modest improvements and additions to various things.
I don't know if anyone really seriously proclaims it to be great. Leastwise I seldom see people talking it up as more than a flawed but enjoyable game. The "it was awful irredeemable trash" folk are routinely just butthurt isomet fags who can't get over 3 onward taking a different direction. Go play nu-wasteland or something and get the fuck over it already.

It's mentioned in passing either by the Narrator, or by terminals entries, and holotapes. Bethesda gave far more of an insight into the prewar world than the original games ever did with Project Anchorage literally taking you to a warzone. Not really sure that's the idealistic 50s vision of the future. That was what they did with Tranquility Lane and it was intentionally meant to come off as eerie.

The game isn't set around the end of the world. It's set purposely after it ended. It makes perfectly logical sense that the way you interact with the prewar world is through terminals and holotapes you find navigating the ruins of it.

It makes perfect sense the people embroiled in the politics of their own time don't spend hours giving you a history lesson about the fall of rome.

Fallout 4 writing is average. There are some interesting ideas but they just aren't developed enough. Even so it's much better than Fallout 3 or Skyrim which don't have any interesting ideas at all.

You're missing the point. Of course they have to acknowledge the actual war. What's missing is the actual state of the world at the time frozen in the ruins. Fallout 4 does a better job as showing the player the lore through logs and stuff that they have to dig through, but the intro flies in the face of it and their cities are completely unlike what you see in the old games.

They really wanted to do the aesthetic you're talking about for the Pitt, and DC wasteland but being located in Bethesda and local to DC, they were complete autists about the IRL politics behind DC's building height.

In FO1, FEV just makes various types of ghoul-like mutants and supermutants, and maybe some monsters.
FO2 has a claim that FEV infected the whole continent but it's by an unreliable information source.
