I just realized I have both on my Steam account. Are they worth playing? Not looking for tips to trivialize the game, but anything I should know going in to enjoy the more?

they're good but way too easy to break. once alicia gets her special ability after a certain point in the story, she can basically solo the rest of the game for you. valkyria chronicles 4 is slightly better about this but it still doesn't do enough to stop scout rushing, though you don't have an alicia in your party anymore so it's not quite as bad

Don't look at the battle score. Play however you want.

You know brotha, maybe telling OP that isn't the best way to have him approach the game? I was a dumb preteen when I played it, but I only found out about the scout imbalance online when I was nearly finished the game. I had a lot of fun trying to make use of the other classes.

The "Scout meta" is glaringly apparent to anyone who simply plays the game. You're graded based on how fast you complete a mission, enemy reinforcements are infinite so you eventually have to rush a base anyway, Scouts get there quickest, and from there you think why not skip all the fighting in the middle since it's pointless.
Using Scouts to rush bases is the natural, logical solution to what the game is asking you to do.

VC1 has a lot balance and pacing issues
you barely get started and you hit the hardest mission in game (mission 4), and a couple of missions later you get so op with orders that you can finish any mission in 1 turn
VC4 abandoned a lot of improvements from VC2 and VC3, but it is still ok. New mortar units are OP.
