RuneScape 3 just never gets good does it?
Are grinding games where the soul goes to die? I can't help but feel like these games are not meant for rational beings.

Probably not the answer you want, but because it's even slower than RS3. I have 1 character on both games and they are both Hardcore Ironman.

I don't play MMOs. I do play single player games that allow for multiplayer.

MMOs are destined to all die out since they need players.

There's a reason OSRS has 6 times the playerbase. Nobody plays the garbage that is RS3 other than people who never got over the sunk cost fallacy.

OldSchool has much less interaction from the user for most tasks. There are of course more intense ways to do most things, especially late game content where you will be very active in switching prayers, equipment, potions and food, and positioning.
3 is much more active with several activated weapon ability skills more like your average MMO like WoW or FFXIV with rotations and such. There's also a very large focus on cosmetics and pay2skip grind features and all kind of cash shop shit. They have stated they will be reducing or removing that stuff in the future.

I personally prefer OldSchool, as do most of the players. Right this moment, there are 210,000 online in OldSchool, and just 30,000 in 3.

It's free to check out, but like any MMO, the real content is in the paid membership.

OSRS exists because RS3 almost killed the company on its own. They also have a polling system for (most) updates you can vote on, which is something every game should have to ensure the devs don't go full retard and ruin everything (RS3).

Every MMO has bots, it's just hilarious how OSRS players always tout the player numbers, when in reality their numbers are skewed drastically because of the metric fuck ton of bots in OSRS.

I quit RS3 (the original game, formerly RS2) after playing about 20 years on and off. I can't recommend picking it up unless you're doing Ironman, but learning the game as an Ironman is also its own can of worms.
The short version of the story is that Jagex fucked up the game health for regular accounts. Bonus XP events and Treasure Hunter items make it so that you're not really incentivized to play the game normally. Like the majority of regular players will tell you to save proteans items for Double XP and use silverhawk boots for Agility.
Once a year, the RS3 team says they'll tone down the microtransactions because it's hurting the game but nothing ever changes

I've played a few MMOs, I'd never play RS3 again, but the big advantages of OSRS are:
>Quests aren't just "kill 10 chickens" filler like every other MMO
>Skilling system means you aren't locked into one class or playstyle for any given content
>Combat is simple, but is unique instead of just being a WoW clone
>Gear progress is good, new updates don't immediately invalidate all content/gear before them
>Minigames are actually useful, sometimes being the best training methods in the game

Oh, and I forgot the poll system. That alone makes OSRS better than basically every other MMO. Sometimes they bypass it, which is annoying, but it still provides a way for players to directly communicate to the devs. I can't think of a single other game, MMO or otherwise, that does that.

>World that feels lived in and active.
>Quests that are actually interesting or funny.
>Group content that is varied & lets me
>Sweaty faggots are only a tiny % of the playerbase

OSRS gets most of that, but I've spent thousands of hours. I want another OSRS.

What polling system? They lowered polls from 75% majority to 70% majority, which allowed sailing to barely pass. Sailing will kill OSRS. This is not hyperbole, the devs have genuinely lost the plot.

RS3 has too much daily and timegated shit to be enjoyable. You can only boss for 1-2 hours because all new bosses are designed with auras (which you can only buy if you've been subbed for several months with premium currency) in mind and if yours are on their mandated daily cool down tough luck. Wanna train a skill? best way is to do retarded daily event (at specific times of day) or else you're just wasting your time. And let's not even begin about all the pay to win and garish cosmetic shit. I didn't even mention necromancy, but yeah, necromancy basically invalidated all combat related leveling content.

RS3 is all about bossing, but the time to get there is pretty fucking stupid. It's not super long, maybe a couple weeks, but that you have to do this boring slog of grinding out combat stats, summoning, prayer, herblore (for overloads), and maybe even invention (which means smithing and crafting and divinity) for the buffs if you're trying to solo high %.
Necromancy is surprisingly fun, one of the more enjoyable things in RS3 in a long, long time.
But most of it is just not good. Most of the skilling content is the natural endpoint for what OSRS was doing until VERY recently, where all skilling is made 100% worthless due to bosses dropping any and all necessary items.

In general I use RS3 as a value store for hyper-rares. Hackers almost never know where or what to look for when they break into an account on RS3, they're like 90% of hte time looking for OSRS stuff. I had my account broken into once (thanks jed!) and the 1 blue phat and like 15 green santa hats and one black santa hat all were left alone, even though they were worth probably 200-300b at the time in osrs.

anyway, no, if you don't want to do the fun bosses, there's nothing for you in rs3, the game's given up on everything but. Everything else in the game is designed to push you towards bosses by giving you better combat gear or tools. Nothing is about the fun of a skill.

oh and you also have to do long ass questlines that are honestly pretty poorly written to get shit like soul split and access to lots of content in the endgame. Now of course questing is just, part of the game, but these quests are so grand in scope and scale, otherworldly multiversal beings that control reality and then you unlock picking through dinosaur shit. 6th age was such an unimaginable fucking mistake. Making the gods appear as characters and making the protagonist a chosen one nuked the stakes so badly that they never recovered.

I'm pretty sure I've been seeing more sets of trimmed rune armor than untrimmed. People really do seem to be using the same spots to grind their skills from 40 - 90+. That particular subreddit is fascinatingly autistic and stubborn about who gets to be on the f2p highscores.

If you try to go to a p2p world and only train f2p skills, even if you try to be careful like avoiding any exp in p2p skills there was one autist who could tell someone was cheating on the f2p highscores because the last digit in one of their skill exp numbers was a multiple you can only get with p2p methods. You gotta respect the tism though. They're playing for thousands of hours so they want to preserve the spirit of that ladder I suppose.

Archaeology's design is everything I hate about the modern game. It feels like it's trying to target the mobile player audience because the skill maxes out at 2 APM. There was no way to actively train it until they released the sash brush years later when everyone already got 120.

None of them ever get good. Runescape has a lot going on but every task is incredibly simple and you learn it after about 3 minutes then do it forever. rs3 is a fun time but it's every bit as grindy as osrs and you still have hours of mandatory grinds to unlock skills now that there's an action bar. I've gone back to it a few times over the years and if you've got no one on your back and the time to waste it will make months go by like days.

Legacy is literally detrimental to your gameplay, it removes the EoC combat system, which should be fine, except the enemies aren't changed in kind, so you go up to enemies with like fucking 100 billion hp and your hits do 15k a pop.

>they've cracked down a lot
lmao according to who? Themselves?
Look at the front page of any of the last 10 bosses released, 8 out of 10 of the top 10 are fucking bots, going for months uninterrupted, unstopped.
They do not touch these bots. They never have and never will, they take great pleasure in knowing they keep the gold flowing in the game and continue to buy bonds with it that others spend real money on. Why would they get rid of sinks for both money and gold?
The better example is to look at content like leagues, or dmm, or even the ongoing grid master.
There's not even 100k people that have logged into gridmaster. You're telling me, even with the promise of tradable rewards, people won't log in to even try out a new mode? Nah, man.

OSRS is filled with bots because jagex doesn't know how to stop them. They may know how to handle and track gp sales and buys, but they straight up don't know how to catch botters anymore. There are entire documentation flows on how to avoid tripping the first few weeks of flags that would get you looked at as a bot, and as long as you avoid those, you almost never get caught. People proudly display having botted from like 500tl to max, and never having eaten a ban. I know people who've had dozens of maxed accounts they either sell or just have for whatever reason sitting around.
Shit isn't done. The proof is the fact the fucking bots are still able to set up on BRAND NEW CONTENT and not get touched for months if not years.
There's a bot on the front of yama who's been there since day 1.
There's a bot on fucking twins that's been there since day 1. reported, and people even say what world they're in, you can see them pop out, resupply, go back in.
Nothing from jagex.
nothing. They don't care.
