What he's really saying is that movies have longer pop cultural appeal.
If you want to sell Mario-themed coffee mugs and blankets based on the video games, you'll need to release a new Mario game every few years as the old ones are forgotten about.
But if you release a Mario movie that's highly successful you can keep selling your Mario-branded toasters and dildos based on the reputation of that single film alone for decades since people will keep re-watching it on Netflix.

Seems very out of context sentences, especially when followed by
> "films evoke nostalgia that leads people to repurchase the games, creating a synergistic effect across media,"
So in the context of the mario galaxy movie, it sounds a lot like trying to re-sell your own childhood at full price.

Still, saying that "films remain forever" is extremely wrong. Who, despite people interested in movie history, is still watching (or buying at full price) movies from 1920s? Why is there so many movie remakes? ...

I don't care for the idea of games being adapted to film or TV in general, but at least I can imagine someone wanting to see a game with a gripping narrative played out in film, what does Mario have?

it's more that games age because they require input from players and how you control them evolves whereas tv shows and movies don't. it's like books, you can read a book from 100 years ago and it's still incredible and the way you interact with books has not fundamentally changed since the invention of the printing press. you read the words and turn the page, even on ereaders.

meanwhile playing a nes game is very different than playing a ps5 game. a show like the sopranos is just as good now as it was when it came out because you watch tv in the same exact way you did back then.

Games having basically stagnated since about 2005 though. There really hasn't been any significant development in gaming for quite a while now and all we're really getting is slightly better looking versions with essentially the same design philosophies. There is a huge difference between say Super Mario World and Mario 64 buy that difference keeps getting smaller and smaller with ever later release. The motion controls of the Wii and stuff like the Xbox Kinect just ended up being fads and VR gaming has never truly taken off. Where really is the innovation that will take gaming to the next level?

The majority of games in 2005 are still structurally very different than games today. An open world game was something like Shadow of the Colossus compared to any of the modern ones. You had World of Warcraft which was basically 10 years ahead of every game at release but that was really it.

You can compare Yakuza 1 to a modern beat em up Yakuza and it's still a very different beast even if they share the same foundation. Something like Ys Origin to Ys X is another example. Personally, I think a lot of the modern design philosophies are worse than the older ones but they're still very different. If that wasn't the case, there wouldn't be people preferring older games because they're less padded, don't have mtx, don't hold your hand as much, etc.

No shit Sherlock, that's what happens when you go from 2D to 3D.

>Games having basically stagnated since about 2005 though
Because there's no where else to go. The leap from 2D to 3D was significant because the addition of the third plane allowed that.

The reason I highlighted these parts of your comment is because the argument about stagnation is dumb when you only recognize a jump in dimensions as the gaming industry moving forward. Well, I've got some news for you. 4D games and beyond will never take off because we operate in a three dimensional world. Don't make stupid comments like this again because you will get roasted for it.

Hoping it's a shit translation, because no matter what angle you approach it from he's wrong and it lacks insight into both industries.

If he's referring to physical media/hardware, both industries have degrading physical mediums. Digitizing old film is essentially the same thing as game emulation, it's not the same experience but it's good enough for 90% of people.

If he's talking about digital availability in an age of updates and digital content potentially being lost this is a huge issue in the film industry too. A fuck ton of films can't be "legally" watched anymore and plenty of films are exclusive to digital storefronts with no option to own.

Not to mention how fucking huge of a deal lost media is in the film industry. Taking a random example, look how much of early Doctor Who is still lost media.

If he's talking about sequels/remakes eclipsing originals this just isn't the case. Look at how many people still think OoT is the best Zelda game and prefer the N64 version to the remake.

This is a fucking grim statement coming from Miyamoto that displays surface level insight into both film and videogames.

Emulators have time and again been proven not to be illegal when contested. Litigation is successful when the user flagrantly or haphazardly admits they source the games from illegal means.

If nintendo raids someones house and find a room full of physical games they personally dumped and a drive of ONLY those titles and tried to catch them out theyd fail. Of course nobody is this airtight so eventually they find a violation
