ITT: Genres you thought you’d like but actually hate
for me it’s metroidvanias. I don’t know why, but every time I try one I get bored out of my mind. I don’t know if the platforming is ass compared to genuine platformers, or if the backtracking is unbearable, or if there’s just a lack of good music to get you pumped, but they just feel so boring to play.

Also why the fuck do I keep getting told posting from my IP address has been blocked due to the abuse? Who the fuck keeps abusing my IP? Fuck off.

its so hard to gauge distance in shit because your arms and shit float in a void so when you try to melee something you either over shoot it or have to be in their face

Too few save points combined with a high-risk mechanic that means when you die a) you need to remember where you last went and b) you have to survive back to there or lose everything doesn't really agree with the sprawling level design of a Metroidvania.

Plus healing yourself can be impossible depending on the situation you're in when you're down on masks.

Also Hollow Knight in particular doesn't incentivize casual exploration because there's nothing to find but the occasional collectible or major upgrade.

Shoot'em ups. By the time I'm good enough at one to make a reasonable attempt at clearing the later stages, the early ones will have long since become insufferably boring. In an action sidescroller or run n' gun game, once I get good at a stage I can engage in higher-risk play to clear it more quickly and keep things fun, but shoot'em ups proceed at a fixed pace, so I feel like I'm just doing the exact same thing every time.

people calling metroid games metroidvanias is baffling to me.
like metroidvanias are the combination of that gameplay PLUS the rpg mechanics and character building, metroid games cannot be metroidvanias as they are missing half of the gameplay elements.
the amount of people fundamentally misunderstanding what makes a metroidvania is absurd.

metroidvanias are great, but I really can't play more than a few a year. it's just not the type of game I can play over and over again.
last one I played was axiom verge and it was ok. the gameplay was fun, the exploration felt random but suited the world building, but progression felt a little boring, bosses were lame too. is megaman ZX worth playing if I haven't played an entry in Z at all? does it even work as an mv?

>is megaman ZX worth playing if I haven't played an entry in Z at all?
The first ZX is kind of contentious with how they handled the map for it. ZX Advent (which is the 2nd game) while more straightforward did a better job with its map. If you just want to play one, do ZX Advent. If you play ZX, keep in mind you may want to look up its map, because the way they handled it was questionable.

because the point is you're forced to melee for the vast majority of your damage, meaning you have to engage more with the mechanics of the boss and your movement options
ranged options can exist, but if they don't have some sort of limit they just make the combat less interesting as a rule

no, metroidvanias are rpgs.
if you have lack the rpg mechanics then its the same game for everyone and it may as well be linear. the rpg elements of having different gear, different drops, using limited materials to create different things, and other such mechanics all massively add up to a different gameplay experience.

and rpg elements absolutely do define a genre, what genre would rpg's be if you removed the rpg elements? what a retarded statement
