L4D1 was essentially a George Romero style, RE1-3 horror vibes, where as L4D2 is Zombieland style "ironic" party-hard slop.

Trying to make a connecting storyline instead of it being an anthology series with each campaign an entirely stand alone experience based on horror concepts was a mistake

And those who don't like L4D2-isms can just straight up mod the whole thing to be more like L4D1 across the whole gamut, and play the classic campaign mode or versus setup where only the first game's items and special infected spawn. At this point one can say 2 was kind of a shitty thing thematically compared to 1, but there's no point to hold any grudges about it.
