to be honest, it's a product of its own time
old games were made to work on limited hardware, so they were mainly concerned about environments feeling empty and the inabililty to add sufficient visual details and features to catch people's attention; sacrifices had to be made given most of the processing power went toward moving and interactable elements. as a consequence, backgrounds and fixtures plain and simple, making it abundantly clear to the player what they had to do to proceed
now that the limitations are gone, games are crammed too full of details, resulting in overloaded environments that make it very hard to tell what the fuck you're supposed to be looking at and what to do.
the problem with paint is that it's too on the nose. it's like giving test takers all the answers to the test while they're taking it
