It's because they keep messing with the essence economy. The balancing was supposed to be "do I use this essence for UT or do I save it to buy stuff/upgrade weapons?" and then they followed it up by either not having upgrades cost essence, not even have essence, or in 4 have essence being nothing but free tiny heals, there is literally no reason whatsoever not to use it for UTs.
The reward is too much. Being in an invincible cutscene attack that does a big chunk of damage is its own reward, it shouldn't drop essence and it shouldn't fill your berserk meter.
Kill two guys get two more as bonus using the essence is more than enough reward.

Lol no, essence economy is giga biased towards UTs. A UT kill in NGB nets you a 7x reward and absorbed essence is worth 0.2x. Thus absorbing essence by enemies from a UT kill nets you 1.4x essence.
Even spending one essence to ET kill one dude is a net positive cuz 0.2+3 > 1+1

NG4 wasnt bad, but like DMC4 it feels kind of like an anime filler arc, not a grand return. I would probably go easier on it if the last 3D NG games werent NG3 and Yaiba 12 years ago. This should have been a slam dunk, but instead its merely pretty good.

NGDS and possibly Sigma 2 where it's just a henchman for Genshin and the Archfiend. Dunno when the 3rd fight happened, but the Dark Dragon's a mid-boss to Ryu so it probably got killed offscreen in Tokyo.

Finished my hard mode run today. I think 4 is pretty good but Ryu felt like even more of an afterthought than I already suspected. He basically got the dmc4 Dante treatment but even worse, and then Yakumo with dark dragon blade steals his moveset .
I ended up liking Yakumo's general attitude a lot and his gameplay is great with each weapon having a specific trick to them. Staff ended up being my go-to. The parry/perfect block almost felt random because enemies attack so fast it's not something you really do on reaction, but against bosses they're really good. Getting used to responding with blood/gleam after parry/perfect block is a game changer.
It felt like 70% NG which honestly I'll take at this point. Already a miracle this even exists. Actually looking forward to continuing master ninja on it.
I'll give it a few more replays but as is stands 2>4>3 and 1 is kind of it's own thing.

NG3 changes the gameplay a lot to incentivize strings and locking down enemies more rather than izuna drop into charge UT (Izuna drop doesn't even work on the majority of enemies and you can't quick charge UTs often since there's no essence). So they gave Ryu much more powerful strings that cover his sides and extend longer. Well from 1 to 2 to 3 the moveset just expands more and more.
4 is more of a sidegrade to 3. A few strings are gone, Ryu can't charge heavies after a string anymore, on landing light attacks are gone, but the gleam moves do make up for it.
Think of it like some utility moves have been removed but he gained the ability to turn into the Flash whenever you feel like it.
I think 3 has the best designed DS moveset but 4 is the strongest and just looks way cooler.

How about spin Y in NG1/2? Does that change from 2 to 3 and 3 to 4? Windmill slash I'm also curious about since I don't see that in any move lists for NG3. I beat the first boss after dying like 20+ times cause I wanted to keep practicing and almost managed to no hit him. It's pretty easy once you realize there's only 3 things you need to do. unga bunga, cancel his read attack with your bloodraven normal attack and parry his normal hits. Do those 3 things and he's super easy. I just did the basic x3 + heavy combo every attack window.

I just don't like bloodraven at all and never enjoyed it in the game at any point. It makes Yakumo attack slowly and I can't find a good button to devote to it that doesn't feel like it prevents me from using bloodraven with some other essential move. All of the bloodraven moves basically do the same thing and have no clear differences, for example there is no bloodraven move that is identifiable as "the big damage move" or "the big AOE move" or "the move that keeps you safe while using it". Once I figured out that the R1 + triangle move has the best AOE I just used that for the entire game.

Most Bloodraven attacks comes out pretty fast if you don't charge them, and they aren't all AOE merchants either. Drill doesn't really blow away loads of enemies it packs the pain on one, Arms are great for sniping a power attack from far, hammer is a bit of a middle ground. Aside from that, the Bloodraven projectiles / mobility moves are way too much fun, good utility too.

- Block buffering being severely nerfed, suck to target/magnetism, the overly large combat arenas, and not having camera recenter and lock-on being separate are all issues that cause....
- The game to be a lot easier once you stop trying to play it like a NG game and play it like a Platinum game with NG-coat of flavor. Abuse the large arenas to isolate enemies, abuse the color coded stagger shit, and bait parries + time perfect blocks/guards with minimal risk
- Bosses have gone from being terrible to Simon Says shit and DMC3ish Zelda style bosses, which is unironically an upgrade
- The change from OTs being actual attacks that could whiff to this teleporting shit is downright retarded
- Why are the best levels in the game visually, filled with these shitty zombie enemies?

Use heals as much as you want, they are actually super cheap. I was playing without them for a good third of the game and realized I had a gorillion ninja coin that I could be spending.
Use the light attack version of bloodraven or bloodraven shurikens if you're at a distance.
There's a charge up animation for UTs that gets skipped if you do it when you press Y/triangle right as you land. In this game I would suggest you keep holding the block button as you stuck the landing since it might prematurely suck in the orbs if aren't holding it.

There are 2 types of attacks bosses do normal attack and red attacks and 90% of my deaths to bosses have been panicking and using the wrong counter to what the boss is doingand just eating shit. There're no more on land moves, no forward strings, no running attacks, heavy attacks now act as Dynasty Warriors attack strings and you need to use raven meter to do what you could do with a single weapon press
Every Yakumo weapon plays the same except for Ninja Box (fast paced normal mode and very slow raven mode), the essence of the first game isn't just gone, they didn't even bother to try and work with 3RE system, basic stuff like on land ut and essence absorption is an upgrade because platinum love making you pay for stuff that should be available from the start
Being able to recover your block when it's broken is simply gone, all in favor of their perfect block/dodge system, in previous games you could press block button the moment it was broken or you got hit, same with dodge

Gonna be real with you guys, the first half of this game is kinda ass.

Not just because of the lack of Ryu (though that is a big part of it, his screentime is less minutes and more like seconds). The opening in general was pretty weak and the whole Seori flashback were Yakumo just agrees to team up with the target he was assigned to kill for no reason was so stupid it was kind of hilarious. it also has the DMC problem where it locks away a lot of essential mechanics at first and you're getting bombarded with tutorials. That fucking mountain section also lasted way too goddamn long.

Thankfully, the game REALLY picks up in the second half. Which if a game is gonna have a weaker part I'd probably end on a high note instead.

One of the biggest flaws with this game is that it over-panders to new players. Literally everything is tutorialized to the point Dunkey made it the central point of his video. That to me is the real reason why training mode is good, rather than combos. Moment these guys spawned I went to training mode and figured out guaranteed kill strings with different positioning. If you want to kick them down to explode on the ground, XXXY enemy step and it'll fall and explode. If you want them to explode in the air while you fly away to safety, then XXXYX Flying Swallow. If you want it to explode in the air but you closer to the ground, XYXX Flying Swallow 2 hits If you want it to explode on the ground but with you also grounded and far away, XXXX back forward X. All strings with the twin blades.
All strings are insta explosion triggers with you far from it and without them having enough life to chase you before exploding.

The blood blade feels really good to use surprisingly but I also have no idea how to use it outside of the "hey use blood blade here dickhead" stuff. The first boss was pretty good too which came as a surprise, the red flashes weren't very easy to react to, felt like I was predicting them instead which is good, because Nioh 2's red flashes were a bit too simple for me.
I was worried when I saw the early footage but I genuinely have no complaints about the game other than the loading between deaths being somewhat long for how often I'm getting gaped.
Just hope it stays this good throughout and I eventually unlock some of the old toys I'm used to having.

the thing is the game is called "Ninja Gaiden 4". With that comes with some very basic expectations.
but NG4 is a game that subtracts, it does not add. it removed all of Ryus weapons, it made his controls, SFX and animations lower quality and it even heavily gutted his base gear moveset.
Even if you somehow think Yakumo is not a dogshit poochie tier character, the work they did on him is fucking lazy and shallow. His mechanics and moveset are so fucking watered down and inferior to NG3RE and even NG2 & NG1. He has less moves, less mechanics, less animations and less gear than all those games (even the enemies he fights are less complex & varied) and 1 of his weapons is just a straight up copy and paste job of Ryus animations. Platinum could not have phoned it in any harder with how lacking in effort this game is.
