I have it. The racing is as solid as ever, I just don't like that the World aspect is just so bare bones, like here's a bunch of small challenges but nothing really to make this feel like a living breathing world populated by a bunch of crazy cartoon creatures with their own wants and ways of life.

The thing is that it feels just like every Mario Kart release since 7, which to say that it's servicable casual Mario Kart. I can always come back to it and I can always boot it up and put up a relatively good performance online in 8k lobbies.
They don't need to reinvent Mario Kart Wii, I have a Wii w/ CTGP so I can just go back and play Funky Kong + Flame Runner any time I want (even though the peak experience is just setting the course choice to random and picking karts on 150cc).

it's a kart racing game, not an action adventure, wtf are you going to do with all of that? it still manages to have more interesting things to find than breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom, which is sad. the open world was made so that you have these 100+ branching paths between all the tracks, the free roam is just a bonus, not the main attraction.

A smaller portion of the hate is just people not being happy with the open world tracks generally being more mundane, not satisfied with the item system, and currently just lacking in content compared to a game that had a ton of tracks added to it over the course of a decade.

I liked it when I played it but the open world is a gigantic waste of resources and time and they fucked up the online. Intermission aren’t as fun as just playing the tracks normally but Nintendo doesn’t like that so they need to force them down your throat. Also costumes being separate characters in the menu and not being able to place stickers wherever you want on your car is dumb. The stickers aren’t even visible on a lot of the cars in the game, including my main so that really annoyed me.
Overall it’s a good and really fun game, but it’s also very flawed. That’s where I think a lot of the bitterness comes from. They assured us that this game would show us that it’s worth the $80 price tag and it didn’t. Having played it I think it’s as good if not a little worse than base 8 Deluxe, which costs $60. Anyone saying the game is straight up bad is either mad because they got burned by nintendo, don’t like racing games, or they haven’t played it and are just looking to shitpost.

The core gameplay is excellent, by far my favorite in the franchise. I also like the open world and missions. It could be better, but it’s still fun and offers more singleplayer content than previous entries and its contemporary. KO Tour is a fantastic mode. The main problem is the lack of options and some conspicuous content gaps. Stickers are a waste without kart decoration. There are too few KO Tours. Battle mode sucks without shine runners and cops and robbers, plus the maps aren’t great. A queue for the anti intermission obsessives would be nice. 200cc. Custom item rules. Etc. Missing some of this basic stuff is inexcusable, and the pace for updates has been ass. But I’ve still played it more than 8dx and will continue to play more

I love the world and gameplay I just find it extremely frustrating that grand Prix is forever locked to playing shitty intermission tracks. I usually play Grand Prix to familiarize myself with all of the tracks before I go on to play vs with my friends but now I can't do that.
