tried it holy shit it's not great. im not one to "muh grafix" because its subjective, but hell the ui is hard to navigate due to how poorly laid out it is as well as how visually hard it is to see anything with clarity. the world has slop items that do nothing beyond selling for pennies, every gun looks the same, and yes i know that a lot of this is a knowledge check, but its extremely jarring. feels like theres forced mouse accel, and not being able to strafe while sprinting feels gay. i was really looking forward to this too they should have released the test before the arc test (which btw i went into arc expecting to hate it)

Played both playtests for Marathon and ARC.
I'll honor the NDA by only talking about ARC.

I won't argue with anything else you said but the 3rd person POV is something I think might break the game in the long run. I compare it to PUBG where once forced FP POV was introduced I simply couldn't go back to 3rd person, I think it's possible to balance around it if the TTK is long enough or using mitigation like the instant building in Fortnite but as a general concept I'd say 3rd person is a detriment to any game that is both PvP and high investment (as opposed to something like Marvel Rivals where it has very little impact).

Idk, I'm a scrub and I'm having a good time so far. The TTK is just high enough that you don't get oneshot by anything besides a shotgun to the face I don't think, but it's not so high that you can get the drop on someone and still eat shit because they can just whip around and outshoot and kill you, which is good for a reactionlet + aimlet shitter like me. It hits the right sweet spot for me, I just can't play shooters where the only relevant skill is how good your aim tracking is. I must be the odd one out though because I actually enjoy destiny pvp as a casual shooter while most people seem to hate it, and this feels very similar to that.

I for one am happy everyone is trying to make their own extraction slop, that means we'll get more kino like Quasimorph or Duckov from cross-pollination in other genres. Don't really care about PvP but this formula makes the looter shooter genre actually interesting. Instead of pogfacing because you just looted the purple dildo that gives you +3% damage to undead on weekdays below 15% health (better than you green colored dildo), there are stakes to looting and also other things to loot besides weapons and armor.

If this shit was PvE, I would be playing it every fucking day. The core tropes of extraction shooters are not really for me, personally. I've played plenty of PvP games and there's a big difference. Losing in Overwatch or Rivals or League is not such a big deal because you can easily and immediately say "Oh, I should have pushed/retreated here" or "Oh, I should have done this", etc. You don't have that here. You're stealthily crouch walking in a dark building and get one-shot out of nowhere with no indication or time to react. It's not fun at all. Not to mention there is practically no onboarding right now and no practice or test range. I get it's in alpha, but still.

I can see this having a big release but I seriously doubt casual players are going to stay very long between getting curb stomped and having a full wipe every 6 months.

What is up with the lack of backpacks and healing in this play test? I have barely found any when looting at the POIs and only have found them on players bodies and even those are limited. I remember having a shit ton of backpacks and healing stocked up during the beta up the point where I had to sell them to make room in my vault for upgrades and other items. I really hope this isn't to incentivize people to rush into pvp just get healing even if they don't have any during a match when trying to avoid pvp. Not that I hate pvp, I just don't want to deal with it sometimes and sneak by people and extract.

You can STILL see the hero shooter completely conflicting with the initial premise of the shells and the digitized consciousness going on in this game, it doesn't make any sense and it doesnt make me feel any better about potential of this piece of shit having a story
Some of these assignments feel niche focused and people are gonna have to look up guides and people are going to be forced to do things they absolutely hate and it'll turn off a lot of people
I see a market for other extraction shooters but this feels so muddled between wanting to be a focused extraction shooter that dabbles in occassional ideas of quests and assignments that are on the surface interesting but just lead to being frustrating. If its a killing thing then focus on the killing, if its not that then give people some kind of basic looting goal instead of going around the map and interacting with things.
Also there's literally no introductory tutorial or anything build into the game. The information you need is all on the discord that you get into when you're in the playtest. I don't know if they've actually bothered to make some sort of a tutorial for a genre that a lot of people still haven't played or understand, but considering this is the same company that works on Destiny 2 I'm not expecting them to explain anything.

This is not an excuse. Overwatch 1 had high fidelity everything speculars and a flawless look while performing incredibly well. That's what AAA graphics engine development actually looks like and the fact is that any failure to make appealing art under a similar stylized restriction is purely on the shoulders of whoever's making it. You do not need enthusiast hardware to see high fidelity textures the developers can sacrifice portraying that detail on unimportant details. Marathons cinematic looks good because it's a completely different studio model and purpose. Bungie could functionally replicate those models in-game with appropriate trade-offs and still have the appeal from that CG film.

I think the lore-tism is what ultimately doomed the company because the madmen behind that (the owners of the studio itself) are probably the most paranoid men in videogame history. Whether is it fear of spoiling their lore-tism or simply an inability to communicate their intentions, they've proven time and time again to treat anyone else they work with poorly. If it was up to them, they would have made esoteric ARPGs for eternity but they know they need some sort of prop (a videogame like halo, destiny or marathon) to get people to fathom their 2deep4u Iceberg. They just need to back-port gameplay ideas from Outpost into Dire Marsh and Perimeter cause right now the way those maps just funnel everyone into the POI's is boring as shit.
The first time I got into the Pinwheel Ship was when I ran into a group of 5 other solo randoms and we all via prox chat agreed to team up and get inside. The access cards, the locked exfils, the environmental hazards, the verticality, all combine to make a good baseline for unique interactions that the other two maps just dont have.
Dire Marsh in particular just feels like it attracts very degenerate playstyles of constantly beelining to the nearest gunshots and third-partying everyone. Even Perimeter has at least some decision-making in how to rotate around because of how divided the map is.
Both maps need like 1-2 more unique events or elements that can mix-up encounters in unpredictable ways.

This is by far the biggest question I have for this project. It's so endlessly fascinating. The art style of the new game is interesting but has literally nothing to do with Marathon. So why did they slap the Marathon name on an obviously completely unrelated concept and then start trying to write lore via an ARG for it? It could not be more obvious that whatever game this is started life as some untitled pvp shooter thing (whatever dumb microgenre people want to pretend it is).

I like what I see, the game is visually very appealing especially on a OLED monitor with HDR. the problem I have is that it's an extraction shooter and I still can't enjoy these games fully with the exception of Hunt: showdown which I haven't played in quite some time but I played about 500 hours of it off and on since EA launch.

I don't get loot fear or anything like that. I guess the best way to explain it is that for some reason I can't form an attachment to these games. ARC Raiders is coming up and I played the server slam for 15 hours and it's the same thing, I like the visuals and the audio is great but no attachment. Maybe people snort cocaine when they play these games? I don't know

How we're feeling about the abilities and cooldowns?

I'm not a fan of having to know each character's skills and how it affects everything, especially since they will definitely keep adding new ones to "keep things fresh".

Just found out if you ping a Recon it gives away your position to the enemy.

The art is obviously very high quality, especially the cutscenes. Cutscenes are way too fucking ADHD and incomprehensible. I love the quality of the character models, especially the robots and their animations.

On the other hand the world is plastic and lifeless. The movement regressed back to Destiny 1 and you can definitely feel it on M&KB. The gunplay is fine but for some reason this is also a hero shooter so have fun with some invisible Hunter sneaking up and dropping your ass (I've done it several times already). Forced aim magnetism is a sin.

All this good art wasted on a mediocre extraction shooter slapped with heroes and Bungie doesn't know what to do with this game. Running around a map feels so dull.

I can't help but view a genre like this as for people in denial about not liking PvP. If you would rather collect garbage and run away or camp so you can 3rd party someone, you just don't like PvP. And if you like PvP, why play this awful mode when you can play any other FPS with normal game modes? I'd get it if this was a cheap game with low risk, but it seems like they want this to be mainstream. They're aiming for way too small a slice of people here considering how much they've probably spent. Probably should have either gone with a conventional multiplayer approach, or fully into co-op PvE, not this half-assed shit. If you take a look at how many developers from Halo CE were involved with every Halo up to Halo Reach, you'll realized it barely had any of the OG still there working on the franchise by the time Reach came out as it had a slow but steady bleedout. Count in the fact that Bungie was facing internal drama to eventually firing Martin O'Donnell in 2014. Even if they stuck around with the Halo franchise (which they didn't want to even before Halo 3), the results would've been the same of the dev studio husking. But alas, all major dev studios like this happen with very few exceptions.
