Are video games art?
It seems that it wasn't. We kinda stopped talking about this at some point since 2013.

There are artsy games that I'd say are at least on par with a banana taped on a wall. I'd argue What Remains of Edith Finch is art.

Answering the question "Are videogames art?" without first agreeing on a definition of what constitutes as art is a pointless endeavor. There is no definition that will be universally agreed upon by everyone, and if there is one broad enough that it encompasses everything that is traditionally considered art, then it will inevitably also include videogames.

Therefore, yes, they are, and always have been.

games being art won't matter as long gamers continue to not treat them as art, look at how many people won't ever play resident evil 2 because they played the completely distinct remake

People who create art don't talk about how they're creating art, they just do. This is a pseud subject to discuss because if you need words like "art" to self fellate and borrow prestige instead of creating it, you're not creating art to begin with.
Video games are entertainment first, because you "play" video games, that's their purpose as commercial products.
Some midwits want to be seen as "important" by others, therefore they really insist on their digital toys somehow being more important than they really are, and by doing so they go against the exact thing which makes art, art. No real artist gets up in the morning and says to themselves
>ah yes, imma art today because imma artist and that's what artists do!
they just create and create and then somebody else comes across their creations and is impressed by or touched by their work, and they decide to become the patrons of that artist, if their financial situation allows them the luxury.
No, the 9-5 "professionals" who bitch on twitter about how "video games need to grow up" aren't artists, they're just employees who wanted to become film directors, writers, producers and the like, but lacked the connections and/or talent to impress others with their "art", and now the cheap flashy digital entertainment HAS TO BE ART because otherwise their lives lose the modicum of meaning they deluded themselves into thinking they had.

tl;dr games are at best free expression, if you want to, you can call them "art" but when others disagree, don't bitch too much. Something can be more than the sum of its parts but it can also be less.

If they’re not art, then why do they have artists working on them?

A meaningless question. It's an irrelevant question like "are we in a simulation?", made for assholes to argue over

Only indies and self funded games are Art. AAA(investor funding, DEI money) are not

People stopped debating this because the quality of videogames dropped drastically. 2013 and gaming turned into greyscale reallism dominating the market and every production company chasing data trends rather than making anything experimental or unique. The state of videogames has dropped even worse since then. It's all gachashit and GaaS shit now. No person alive will try to argue that fortnite or genshin impact are art, even whales with thousands spent in each.

video games as a medium have the capacity to be art. most video games are not art, they are a product to be consumed, but can sometimes have various elements that are regarded as art.

Correct. Video games are "art" only in the sense that literally anything man made is "art", which therefore renders the word "art" itself to be meaningless.

Yeah, and then there's people like me who won't play any RE game because the control scheme is straight up dogshit.

Video games that are made from scratch are art
What I mean by that is old school games that didn’t use AI or copy code. Any original code that white nerds made in the 2000s and 90s was art because it required a huge amount of skill and a specific goal. Nowadays it’s all AI sloppa done by jeets and women copying so no, not art. But compiling the original source code for video games was art
