I don't fucking know. I'm playing HK1 and it's pretty damn unremarkable. They are mediocre as shit compared to any Igavania on the GBA

realistically it's the art, the cute designs and the dark cozy feeling of the game.

they're cheap, available on every hardware, have a ton of content and mostly attract fromtrannies

A fanbase that massively overblows them. They're mediocre to the last degree, especially for Metroidvanias.

just play them and figure it out for yourself

People like the art enough to excuse the middling gameplay.

They're fucking cheap. A massive part of why Hollow Knight got popular is because it was $15. Silksong is only $20. Never underestimate the effect of low price and indie status resulting in lower expectations. It's why Undertale became a cultural phenomenon, when it wouldn't have even a sliver of the popularity if it was a $60 AAA game.

The first game gets good if it's your first metroidvania or when you get dash. It's honestly pretty miserable gameplay wise when you start.

I have never backtracked in a metroidvania as much as in these games. At least they were kinda atmospheric. Still a massive waste of time

cheap
HK came with multiple DLCs, all free, totalling up to a shitload of content
even base Silksong took some people ~90 hrs to 100%
virtually no competition in the Indie Metroidvania market when HK came out, and unbelievably nothing has matched it in all this time. it's still the benchmark for every new Metroid-like that comes out (Ender Lilies got compared to it, so did Grime, so did Nine Sols), and now that the market is glutted with them Hollow Knight stands out like a diamond in the rough because of how solid and polished it is mechanically and artistically
and these >>724085309 >>724086058
some people make not liking them their entire personality, but to each his own.

I beat both games and enjoyed them, thanks for confirming the fanbase is mostly composed of fromdrones

Big worlds to explore, high enemy variety, it’s a metroidvania (I love the genre), nice music, cute characters
