I told you video games are quickly-deprecating software.

I mean what other medium calls something from 2010 "retro" unless its lifespan was only 10 years?

planned obsolescence.
they could keep old games running perfectly if they tried. hell, fans do it for free in countless non-profit emulator projects.
the only reason this billion-dollar-bitch won't do it is because they want you to have FOMO and buy their products without thinking because if you don't buy them now they might be gone some day. It's a choice.

maybe thats because Nintendo does everything it can to make sure of that?
They are the faggots that think selling games for 3 months and then pulling them is a good idea
Constantly nuking romsites and emulators for ((no reason))

In economics and industrial design, planned obsolescence (also called built-in obsolescence or premature obsolescence) is the concept of policies planning or designing a product with an artificially limited useful life or a purposely frail design, so that it becomes obsolete after a certain predetermined period of time upon which it decrementally functions or suddenly ceases to function, or might be perceived as unfashionable.

Videogames are vulnerable to the whims of the market same as any other product. And videogame console design IS industrial design,

He is right. Games are a smaller niche than movies. If you release a game, most consumers will simply buy and play it in the first few months after its release; Afterwards, sales go down. Meanwhile, movies don't age and there is always an audience to reach at any time. A kid today can say "I want to see the Mario movie" just like 2 years ago

Nearly perfect emulators already exist for every console generation up until AT LEAST the 6th generation. Most of which are open source and licensed under GNU General Public Licenses. They would barely have to do any fucking work at all, just license what is already freely available. But they won't do that because they don't want the public to be aware that such emulator projects exist, let alone give them credit.
You could argue that this quadrillion dollar corporation somehow can't afford to develop an emulator themselves. But when there's a free option sitting right there and them not taking it, that's a choice. They don't want you to play your old games. They want to repackage them over and over with shitty ports and remakes so you keep buying the same shit over and over. And tendies keep falling for it hook, line and sinker.

The industry is ran by the worst possible people for maintaining and growing the industry.

They got a false boost from a mixture of BlackRock money, China entering the market, and accumulated goodwill from back when the industry knew what it was doing. Now that bubble is bursting.

Worse actually, because their internally developed emulators are inaccurate pigshit compared to what fans have made.
>only nerds care about accuracy
In the Switch version the floor wasn't even reflective in the Shadow Link fight in Ocarina of Time. That directly affects the intended message of the scene. Because you're fighting your mirror self, the mirror floor was symbolic.
Even if you don't care, it's not what the original artist intended.
Also it just fucking looks worse.

I don't think that retro is defined by a specific length of time. It's more that it belongs to a paradigm that's in the past. Some paradigms last five years. Others last 20. Some are very obvious when you leave. Others are subtle and only visible in retrospect. And at it basically never happens right at the turn of the decade.

I think that 2015 Japan was the end of a paradigm before it got back to its roots and also before isekai took off. Hopefully 2015 America will be remembered as a flurry of insanity that fell off its peak in 2023-ish and '25-'26 will be remembered as the last remnants fighting desperately to hang on and failing completely. The woke era is so ridiculous that people in a hundred years will wonder if it even actually happened.

Not really do you know how many have built up and refined their rom library the last few years? The mature intelligent gamer have pretty much pivoted away from western games with tard writing and solely play new non western games, older >2015 western games and then emulate console games. We don't need to buy another game for at least 2 decades.
