the advantages of spears become less relevant with the superhuman durability and agility of videogame player characters. you're effectively a knight in armor which makes a fast close range slashing weapon much more viable.

I really like spears. But adventurers travel through various terrains, and I think it's just easier to have a sword on your hip all the time, rather than actively carrying a polearm in your hands.

Sword/shield would be best. There might not be space to swing underground which means your axe will be worthless. With a sword you can still stab.

If the spear user has it couched into their arm, they can just lean back their body to rip it out of the grabber's hands. It's not as easy as "just grab the tip lmao", and pictures like you posted don't change the actual physics that would make it nearly impossible.

The implication is that if you're larger than life warrior, a spear is significantly less practical than a heavy blunt object. A large monster or full plate armored man, let alone multiple of those threats, will not succumb to super human spear thrusts as easily as they would super human heavy blunt object swings. Swinging is just vastly more practical with literally slaying dozens of opponents and doing lethal damage to the toughest opponents in just a single swing.

Spear is what you give peasant who don't know shit about fighting so they can point the pointy stick at the enemy and be somewhat effective.
I like spears but it's one of the least 'heroic' weapons.

Spear is mainly weapon for military and against cavalry i.e. when theres troop of soldiers lining spears.

That said, if talking about not too long spears (2-2.5m), grabbing one if user uses peoper spear fighitng techniques is unrealistic. Fighter can retract spearhead almost back to his own body, allowing easy repeated stabs so approaching spear user or blocking spear is very risky thing.

In duel with skilled warriors without heavy armor, spear has clear advantage. In european heavy armor, spear cant be really used on foot and sword becomes just an ineffective club.

You are just setting up a tug-of-war with a massive disadvantage for yourself - and that's in the best case scenario where you actually managed to grab the wooden part mid-flight.

Spear is the most heroic weapon both in greek, nordic and chinese cultures. Odin wears a spear, Greek heros and gods (Ares is portrayed holding Spear) used spears, in China spear was basially the best weapon. Pictures of slaying dragons and monsters were mostly with spears (duh since they are huge).

Sword is basically just a noble ceremonial weapon. Even in Japan, its not Katana that was main weapon, but Naginata and Yari.
