It was because most of us were supposed to move on shortly after 2007. As I think back on it I am pretty sure for most of us Millennials we got into gaming either in the mid to late 80s and early to mid 90s. For the biggest of normalfags it was either the PS1 with games like Gran Turismo, sports of course and maybe FF7 or MGS1 as their most hardcore games. But I would say most of the biggest of normies got into games with the PS2 thanks to GTA, sports, and racing video games like NFS. This was the peak of gamer culture and young malehood.

So what was supposed to come after this? Basically I think we were supposed to stop being into gaming as much at around the 2010-2012 years. Just before the start of last gen essentially. I say this because a lot of my friends were coming of age at this point being in their early 20s, going to college, finding a wife, etc. Basically they were moving on to a new part of their lives, or actual manhood as society calls it. Those of us who didn't want to let go, well we entered into a new era of gaming that the industry didn't necessarily want us to be a part of. But they did adapt anyways and they also did not care to desecrate the hobby we loved. We weren't even supposed to be a part of the audience past a certain age.

Just my opinion on the topic. Gen Z is clearly following the same path as many of us and they to don't want to stop gaming once they reach their 20s.

Why did George Lucas create the prequel trilogy? It was because brand recognition and he was also hoping to capture a new younger audience. Of course he also assumed plenty of OT fans would bring their kids to watch the new movies, which in fact did happen. Same idea with games. I can only speak from my own experience, but smartphones didn't start becoming commonplace in my area until around 2011. So for a significant part of my life, the internet and IRL were completely separated from each other.
