Do gamers really need to play the first game to enjoy the sequel?
Since the sequel 99% always an improvement of the first game.

these games are so short there is no point in skipping. It'll take you a weekend to beat them. Like 6-7 hours at best.

imo the only reason to play the second is for the narrative but even the story is worse than the first game

the only thing it did better is interlinked ruins. 2 is a step up in every possible way except that one and it hurts knowing this

I love 1, but honestly 2 is a pretty good self contained story.

Depends on the game. The vast majority of sequels are designed to be self-contained, and even when they aren't the story often isn't good enough to be worth caring about.
