Focus entirely on the farming and light life sim aspects. No mine. No combat. A few leisure activities like fishing, but they shouldn't be a viable alternative to farming.
Build in small production chains, similar to what SV has with canning, wines, etc.
Focus on the selling. Okay so you made honey, now you need to bring to a.local farmers market to sell. Trends come and go, in some seasons flowers might be in more demand than honey.
Crops can get ruined. Too mich rain? Some of your plants have root rot. Disease mechanics, crop rotation.
It should be just close enough to realistic autistic farm simulation but still be comfy and approachable.

Time to talk about the Harvest Moon situation:

The original name of the series, in Japan, is Bokujō Monogatari. They were originally created by Victor Interactive, which later got bought into Marvelous and that's who still produces Bokujō Monogatari to this day.

When they (Victor Interactive at the time) wanted to localize the game to NA, they worked with the company Natsume. The localized name of the series was Harvest Moon. This went on until the 3DS era, where the company (now Marvelous) wanted to start publishing games on their own, and wanted to break with Natsume. However, Natsume had trademarked the name "Harvest Moon" under their own company and refused to give it up.

Natsune then turned around and hired mobile developers and Farmville developers to make some random games, slapping the name "Harvest Moon" onto the products. Marvelous, meanwhile, ended up using the title "Story of Seasons" for the new games they produced. It's why the latest remakes are called games like Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral town for the old GBA game, using the new title but with the old familiar subtitle and (obviously) the old gameplay.

So yes, "Harvest Moon" has gone to shit, because Natsume stole the name and has been hiring any incompetent idiot they can to pump out titles and grab them some attention. But the Bokujō Monogatari / Story of Seasons games are still being made and still going strong, along with the spinoff titles like Rune Factory.

Honestly, I felt like the series went downhill a bit with the Gamecube or Wii games. They'll still keep you busy, but it feels more like the games are chewing up all your daylight time with activities in different places. It felt like with the SNES/PS1 games, you could just give yourself as much work as you like (between crops and animals) and it was up to you to manage if you wanted to spend all day watering crops, or just plant enough to make some money and then have time to go into town and talk with people. (which required managing time for that) With the most recent Story of Season games, you get a small area to farm and raise animals, but you have a hundred little side activities that chew up your time if you want to interact with them.

I'm not sure how much Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town (the most recent one) is at this, but that's been my experience with the most recent SoS games over the original ones.

I don't get it desu, I tried Stardew Valley like 3 separate times and fucking hated it every time. Meanwhile I like most Bokujou Monogatari entries aside from Olive Town and the remakes, but half of Olive Town's problem is that it fell for the Slopdew meme just like every other modern knockoff farming sim and focused on retarded tedium mechanics and the "freedom" to fill your farm with ugly clutter. The minute they returned to form with Grand Bazaar they massively improved. Not to the standard of their older titles, obviously, but enough to where it's actually playable with a few mods to mitigate the babby's first vidya marketing they've been doing in Japan.

What's the appeal, legitimately? I appreciate that the dev seems like he's got a good head on his shoulders, but the game itself was profoundly unpleasant to play imo. Unpleasant art style, shitty time economy, unappealing NPCs (as far as I played, anyway), iirc there were a handful of permanently missable events with retarded requirements as early as summer of year 1, just a lot of bad decisions overall. It didn't feel relaxing or productive to play, just tedious, like it was trying to force you into one really specific playstyle. Its ripoffs are even worse since they concentrate hard on all the things I disliked about SDV.
Maybe he fixed it in the years since I've tried it, it's been a few years, but it's just not for me.

You can't permanently miss anything, at worst you'll just have to wait another year. The NPCs are a matter of taste and opinion, but I thought some of them were pretty good, and most were about on the level of similar games. It's as relaxing as you want it to be, you can really push hard to get as much done as possible in year 1 but like I mentioned, there's really no rush because there's no time limit and you won't ever miss out on anything, you might just have to wait if you miss the deadline in a year. If you played it a while back then yeah it's changed a fair bit, lots of huge updates. Another nice thing about it is that it's very moddable, which I really like but I understand not everyone is interested in that kind of thing.

The selling point of these games are characters.

There are far more complex farming games in the market but they don't focus on characters like SV and SoS.

This must've been fixed in later updates because the events I'm talking about were exclusive to a specific time frame in year 1 and year 2 respectively. One had to do with visiting a grave or a shrine or something and either bringing something to it or having progress in some specific area to trigger it? I don't remember the details, but they were pretty important to the story afaict.
As for the other stuff, fair enough. I found the NPCs pretty samey compared to some of the better BM titles and the gameplay weirdly fragmented, but if the game's changed that much who knows how many of my complaints got patched up kek. I think the last try I gave it was on like 1.4.x or 1.5? If he's done any major rebalancing or at least reduced the mandatory point-and-click shit I might give it another shake down the road.

The preview video didn't look terrible. You look at it and can immediately tell that it's DS/3DS Rune Factory. It's also less than $20 so if it turns out to be average or terrible I wont feel like I got ripped off too badly.

It's a 2 man team however. One programmer, one writer, and the artists and composers are freelance? So this game will take its time to get here. But the lead dev has been programming since the GBA days so I suppose he has enough experience to actually make something.
They also got the RF composer Tomoko Morita back to make some music. Not all the music, but some of it.

It's pretty good, they fixed a lot of the time gate stuff that was going on with the original version of Grand Bazaar. I was able to reach World Rank bazaar and get married by the end of the first year pretty easy and have all sorts of different animals, an extra barn, three mushroom logs, level three bee keeping, three outdoor fields and one underground field, the most improved soil quality, crazy sized storage, a super bath, and orichalcum tools by the end of year 1 as well.
Really all I have left is having a child and maxing out everyone in town, making the ultimate tools, making the Summer, Autumn, and Winter sunstones for the underground field, winning some more competitions all the way thru to gold a bunch of times, and getting the bazaar to rank 99 thru donations now that I've hit World rank and finished the story part.
It's also nice because at least for the Switch 2 version it, like Rune Factory Guardians of Azuma, actually comes with a little manual in the box when you buy it physical.

You're probably thinking of when your grandpa's ghost shows up in the beginning of Year 3 at his shrine/grave, and judges your progress so far and rewards you dependingly. But it doesn't really matter if you disappoint him the first time, he'll show up on New Year's Day every year afterward and you can ask him to take another look. Basically he just wants you to have a wife and a decent farm, and be friends with some of the villagers.

I don't think it's that because the event was pretty explicitly somewhere in the middle of year 1, but it might be the same grave. You had to be there at a specific time of the day, and you had to either bring something or have some progress in a specific area. All the games on SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, Game Boy, GBA, and DS are the original series. Tale of Two Towns (DS/3DS) is also official Harvest Moon.

Harvest Moon: A New Beginning (3DS) was the last official game to use the Harvest Moon game. The rest of the 3DS games were named Story of Seasons.

Everything after that has been named Story of Seasons. Anything after the 3DS named "Harvest Moon" are the Natsume knockoffs made by cheap mobile developers.

As for remakes and re-releases, all the remakes are named Story of Seasons. So we have SoS: Friends of Mineral Town, SoS: A Wonderful Life, and SoS: Grand Bazaar as remakes of older games.

The worst thing about Stardew is that the townpeople are so lifeless.
There's such a lack of dialog for their day to day activities that you either stop talking to them entirely or resort to fanfiction mods to give them more things to say.
The community has to project what they want from these characters because the actual game gives you very little to work with when an event cutscene is not going on.

If you're going to make a farming game then focus on the characters and the town. The farming has to be passable, and people will want multiplayer and mod support, but what will make the game stand out is the actual immersion of that rural life.
A likeable cast of characters and the freedom to do whatever you want on your plot of land. I'd say the goal to shoot for would be the Night Market in Stardew. That's the gold standard for aesthetic and immersion.
It's either that or pandering to autists that want spreadsheet farming.

Sakuna is a good game. I don't have much to say about it other than it feels good to play, is charming, and deserves every bit of success it got but doesn't deserve to be milked by gacha like what marvelous is going to do.

Sakuna is great, love the detail that went into the rice farming and the gameplay otherwise is very fun too. I hope they expand on it someday and start adding other grains to care for in as much depth as the rice farming was.

It's great. They did really good with that one. Looks so pretty, music is excellent, characters are great (best mayor in any farm game), and preparing for and participating in the bazaar is so much fun.

I've been playing harvest moon since back to nature on ps1. I also can't get into stardew valley. It just feels like indie slop to me. I don't like hollow knight either if that makes any difference. I think those people can enjoy it, but they're like a different generation from me. I'd rather play story of seasons on the ds/3ds.

The difference being that the RF people behind that game you posted are not responsible for how the games actually play. They are idea people that need to recruit a team to actually make the game. And so they get the bottom of the barrel newbies on a limited budget to make a game and to no one's surprise it's not good.

Whereas the kickstarter game has the guy that actually made the RF games play that way working on it, and needs the idea people to help him. They are not the same.
