Is working in a union at Rockstar really want? I feel like, by design, these huge developers need a consistent group of maybe 6-12 people. Everyone else is expendable. You put working at Rockstar on your resume so you get a little free advertising for your indie project.

Unions are the only reason why you would work a job in America. Pay somewhat stays with inflation, not much buts its better than other. Healthcare and pension. Every person I knew went union route still have jobs and a house while the others, like salesguys or run of the mill working for a mom and pop shop are fucked right now. Or they make a shit ton of money for 3 years, loose it all struggle for a few and get back up or never again, while the union stays constant and you still make money. I regret not going union route. I bet if I did I would be better off than trying to be my own boss and struggling when the dollar inflated 300% in the last 5 years and prices can't stay high because shit is fucked, I could only raise it 50 bucks which is not a lot. 50 bucks is two meals at a reastrunt now.

Unions are not bad and they are the only thing that is keeping you from being fucked. If you want to work and do your dues I would go union. I fucking regret not doing it. But if you can't join a union I would start your own business right now and do that. Its better than working for a small business that pays you less and after 7 years your still in the same spot. That is a horror show you don't want to experience.

Look at the UK if you want to see cartel style unions that literally shut down the country to extort money from the state. The US had the same problem with mafia owned businesses, specifically shipping in the 80s. The mafia protected its smuggling network ruthlessly and the legitimate workers were part of "the union"
Honestly most unions today are just scams. Very few offer anything positive for workers beyond basic legal aid which you wont need if you are a good worker. They just use lawfair to extort money. Its really fucking rare for an employer to be so shit that they run foul of regulation because regulatory bodies can arrest your jewish ass.

Unions work by restricting access to labour thus forcing employees to negotiate as no workers means no profits.
