It was very ambitious, and given it was on N64 was quite an impressive bit of software that showed what the console is truly capable of.
The trouble is when the novelty wears off, the game is just too big for its own good. I wouldn't say the game was bad, but it's not the sort of game I would want to go through again after beating it, wheras with something like Kazooie I could pick up and play through it any time, because it isn't a massive time investment.
