why do you need romance? it’s gonna be lame as shit and never live up. not even persona gets that in depth with it. I mean I get a little flirting or fun dialogue here and there (paper mario does this) but it’s better when it’s all in your head and you imagine your interactions. That’s why when I was a kid I read so much fanfiction about pic related (she also has a recent fanmade VN of her own hoo boy) even though there’s no romance in pokemon. go to fanfiction sites, or better yet use an AI chatbot it’s 2020+5. you’re gonna miss out on a lot of rpgs

ok now that I think about it maybe persona does it okay. I just remembered playing 4 and remember even snippets of cute dialogue in the dungeon crawling sections with your romance option. I don’t know if p5 had that? also never played baldurs gate 3 and never finished a rune factory so I can’t definitively say romance would never live up in an rpg. though I admit playing persona 4 I remember feeling the tingles. even in that game I was wishing I could do more or have different dialogue but that might have been way too much for the devs when you already have a massive 80 hour rpg there.

Romance isn't a factor; it's that they've spent the last decade being a complete mediocrity at best. All a lack of romance does is make them lose out on a potential bit of marketing if one choice manages to go viral.
Sure If I had a gun to my head and was forced to choose between a new Obsidian, Bethesda or Bioware game, I'd pick Obsidian in a heartbeat, but that's not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Romance marketing is as easy as getting an appealing face (I say easy, 9/10 RPGs fail this simple step) and VA to show off a scene.
If you want to market it as a serious game for serious gamers, you actually have to do the legwork to an audience that is increasingly apathetic to marketing lies.

Honestly, stealing Larian's EA model would work wonders for them in this regard.
They could show off their potential, and Obsidian's usual crippling weakness of bugs would be waved off as something to be fixed later.

I'll be honest, I never end up liking romance in games. Not only is it often a waste of resources and manpower that could be spent on better or more important aspects of the game, but its often half-baked too, really lame and also they lock by necessity you to only a few lame options instead of being able to go for characters you actually like.
