The obvious intention behind the breaking of weapons is to help keep exploring viable, and honestly I kind of agree with it. There are tons and tons of weapons around, and if I just got a 50+ strength weapon right out of the gate, I'd fucking hate it if every time I explored a nook I found a weapon because I will never fucking use the damn thing. Honestly, it's either that or you just literally never find any weapons which doesn't make sense with what the enemies all carry with them.
It sucks, but it keeps the rest of the game actually fun.
