but either way, youre looking at a screen, which in a realistic sense, would apear as if youre looking through a window.
that would hinder how much of the world you can see at any given point, so by increasing FoV youre essentially increasing a fish eye lens effect. (0 is the most realistic, but impossible to play, and numbers in the 20-40 range "feel" more realistic, despite not, and 75 is standard video game fish eye lens, and increasing it further allows people to see enemies to their sides, and even behind them. so competitive players set it higher to see more on screen.
(and some autists dont like how slow their character moves, and they somehow fall for the illusion they move faster when FoV increases. a lot of racing games will increase FoV to make you FEEL like youre moving faster, so they can save on CPU performance, when in reality youre not moving that fast.)
