I enjoyed the first enough that I'll buy it no matter what, but I'm also extremely skeptical of the new gameplay system.

If you've ever played roguelikes, I assume it's basically a fancy name for that. Every character acts at the same time, and different actions might take different amounts of time. So a fast enemy for example might act several times per your turn, or vice versa.

Psi is still strong, it just requires you to prepare a bit more akin to some kind of pseudo vancian magic system and switch up your spells depending on the encounter if you plan to learn all schools rather than specialize. Single school specialists in turn got buffed by the addition of the feat that lowers psi costs even more. Regardless, it's still a shitton of different damage spells and utility abilities under one stat. Biggest nerf / extra tedium with the change was adding inhalers, so there's a long term resource cost like ammo and craftables are for other builds.

I do wish they had buffed some of the already shitty spells or given them new feats to compensate though. There were already several bad or very niche use case spells in some schools, and the addition of limited slots makes you even less likely to use them.

The sad thing is that the psi overhaul didn't impact the actual psi power level that much, it's still a psychosis crit spam machine. It just made the alternative, tranquility jack of all trades builds impossible and they were by far the most fun way of playing the game.

no other builds let me freeze a nigga, shock a nigga, stun punch a nigga, build a wall to block a nigga, berserk a nigga or doppleganger a nigga to skip his turns over and over
no other playstyle let me reduce cooldowns on my abilities and then boost my movement speed for free while lowering my opponents
no other fighting style let me toss a free scaling super frag grenade and HE grenade every other turn, sometimes both in one turn with synergies, to wipe out entire groups in two attacks that cost nothing
psionics were ludicrously broken and that's why everyone loved them
they didn't have to concern themselves with trivial things such as ammo or durability or even item weight since they didn't need to carry grenades, traps, repair kits, ammo, etc
all styg needed to do was increase the health penalty of the pill and add some kind of brain fatigue (durability) mechanic and psi reserves gimmick (ammo)
both of which could be fixed with items like inhalers and more psi pills or something
everything else he did was retarded and way over the line for how much he nerfed the shit out of psi though
heres fucking hoping that dials back the faggotry with 2 but i really doubt it, he's dead set on ruining his whole franchise with the most unfun autistic shit imaginable

All of that required meticulous planning because your PSI has a hard limit per combat as even the boosters have a very long cooldown. Meanwhile I can walz into a room and dome 10 dudes with a sniper rifle, my only real limit is how many guys are there so I can farm back my AP by keeping up shooting spree.
I have played knife, pistol and sniper on dominating.
All 3 of them were significantly more powerful in mid-latergame than my allrounder PSI.

I haven't played since before the nerf but to me it was largely just Chrono that was retardedly OP to the point nearly every single build had it because why the hell wouldn't you, it was giving out free turns. Personally I always thought the Psi-powers should have been more like a more subtle buff or very situationally useful tool not something you build a whole character around. I don't really like Psi compared to crafting traps and shit.

Snipe is just a worse mechanical pistol build that gets to kill 1 enemy for free every turn. You end up using your handgun more than your sniper rifle. Mech Pistols are extremely good though, especially with Temporal Acceleration.
