Using Metro as an example here is funny because while the games can be said to have some amount of optimism (what with having an alternate good ending to 2033 and the happy ending of Exodus) the actual books follow this narrative too.
In Metro 2035 Artyom discovers the conspiracy to keep the people of Moscow in the dark about the outside world and when he tries to reveal it, people: betray him in exchange for a cushy life/don't give a fuck about truth/decide living in the mud like they have for the past 20 years is better than trying to change things. He leaves with his wife, leaving the people to remain in the darkness, ignorant of the truth.

Pic related is a great post-apocalyptic novel which feels like it was way ahead of it's time for a 1956 book. But it also a hilariously egregious example of post-apocalyptic world building where societal collapse in 1950s Britain instantly leads into chaotic war of all against all, and it takes like 5 minutes until the nation is full of savage gangs of neo-barbarian raiders and rapists.

Second, the point of the game (TLoU1) is that utilitarianism (The Fireflies and "the cure") is a self-defeating cycle that will inevitably destroy humanity.
