You need RAM for swapping and partially offloading models as they can't realistically fit on consumer hardware VRAM. This is about text generation stuff, not image.
The big Chinese text models like Deepseek are like 700GB and you have to load it into memory or the speed goes to like 0.001%. Text models don't necessarily need rapid speed as long as you can actually fit them into memory. It just means 3 words a second instead of 10 and you're not going to read that fast anyway.
700MB of RAM, while expensive an requiring a specific enthusiat server kind of setup, is much less expensive than getting 700MB of VRAM.
Anyone running these giant models locally is very rare, though, so prices are just expensive because of them being loaded into server farms or something. I really don't know what the corporate use of RAM is.

It's only over 500 because the company stopped making this model. They likely have a newer model. All those sellers are third party losers.
If you still have the packaging, just put yours back in it to make it look new and sell it for a profit while you buy the newer model.

I say good. the entire world of software has desperately needed hardware to stagnate for a long time now. you know that false meme about humans only using 10% of their brains or something? for computers it's actually true, in fact it's an understatement. every program you know could run at least 10 times as fast. it just didn't have to because when it was written computers were already very fast and wide and expected to become even faster and wider soon. that's why every program runs like shit. it was easier to write in a horrifically inefficient way so that's what you get. the real inefficiency of common software ranges from 10x to 1000x nowadays, and it's still rising. a whole generation of programmers never learned to optimize and this would fix that. considering how many programmers there are now the amount of clever optimization techniques we would get out of this necessity would be amazing.

This is basically because RAM chip producing companies saw the recent dealings for opening like 10 AI datacenters and basically stopped to zero the production of consumer ram and started only producing server grade chips and sticks and for gpus, basically the fact that now ram has become scarce, the providers jacked up prices into oblivion and since stores need to keep the 35% profit margin I think you can do 2+2 at what happened here.

>>725043912
>killed collective action
What killed collective action is that the gaming market isn't buying hardware near as much as other markets and collective action from the gaming market would do absolutely nothing to prices. You're wanting to kick dust and expecting it to create a tornado.
Plus nobody is going to stop buying hardware just because the price has gone up along with the price of everything else. Gaming isn't where people are going to draw the line.

You need to be somewhat skilled to get decent output from AI too. I've been doing some little projects around home with automation and let the AI write the code for me. Even for a simple 20kb program there was a lot of tard wrangling required and I needed to make use of my very modest coding background to check what it wrote and tell it to unfuck specific mistakes I caught. And even then, I still fed the code into a separate AI and asked if to see if it saw any bugs (it did).
But in the end it took what would've been impossible for me to do myself even with a year of studying and let me finish it in under a week.
Now, yes, I could've just taken its output and written it to an Arduino sight-unseen and burned my house down and then posted on reddit about how AI will never replace humans because I'm a fucking retard. That's the brown path. I'm white though so I used it as a tool instead of a replacement for my brain. I do not get angry at my hammer when I hit my thumb and I don't throw my gamepad when I fuck up on a boss.
Prepare your anus because I'm about to blow your mind: this experience was a direct 1:1 mirror with my experience working with human programmers over my career, except the AI doesn't get bitchy when I caught its mistakes, understands what I mean when I use the wrong terminology, didn't tell me it was leaving for lunch, didn't show up late, and was available at 3 in the morning when I had an idea I wanted to ask it about.
The same thing goes for artists except they're even more emotionally fragile and unwilling to change their art.
AI is a 6/10 human employee, and I mean 6/10 like "slightly above average" not like a game review. People being too in denial or too retarded to see this aren't going to stop the juggernaut, they're the fecaloids the juggernaut is going to grind into a fine paste.

The problem is that what you did as a free hobby is NOT going to get done most of the time, even in crucial areas.
You're working off an assumption that an AI-driven industry will favor people who ship good software. No, it favors clowns who ship barely functional vibe code the fastest.
Fucking Microsoft deploys utterly broken AI-slopped updates now, and they're allegedly one of the leaders in the field.
At its most basic level, all AI does is lower barriers of entry. If you've been paying attention to just about anything in your life, you'd know it's a bad thing to do.

Jeet coding. Boeing airplanes were falling out of the sky, and they killed 2 whistle-blower, because Jewish executives could save money with $13/hr Indian programmers.
Jeets throw shit code at open source projects so they can add it to their resume.

or better reframe it - its a strategic industry, its not an oil or consumer-oriented tech race, its an arms race, it will never make profit from a service or product - but it will gobble up government funding just like weapon manufacturers do

I lucked out on purchasing 32GB CL30 RAM for ~110€ last year before the price hike, but I never looked at how much M.2 SSD's cost now. Considering getting 2TB SSD soon for data hoarding and cheaper models sell for around 125-150€. Was this price range always the same or did tariffs fuck it up too?

My brother in piss, we've be on this path for the last decade, AI isn't the problem. Do I need to remind you of Master Chief Collection? That easy slam-dunk that Microsoft shat out and then spent a decade NOT fixing?
In my experience it's already more competent than at least half of new CS graduates, as I said earlier. If anything, AI is a potential solution, the ONLY solution. Browns and women are the disease and AI is the cure - maybe.
