Learing japanese for videogames is dumb and borderline useless. All the great classics got translated and only niche bullshit that didn't have western appeal got left untranslated.

>didn't have western appeal
why would that ever matter? and a bunch of old shit only recently got a translation.
i never expected mahjong to be this fun, i could be playing it for decades but only started because they decided to translate mahjong souls for some reason.

Plus Japanese writing is as complex as a caveman's.

I got into the Yakuza games by playing the japanese only HD remasters of 1 and 2.
What a great experience, but I barely understood anything.

Japanese is a dumb bullshit language for sure, but
>All the great classics got translated
The games you're thinking of are only classic BECAUSE they got translated. There are great games out there that likely would have become classics if only they had received a proper translation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMMUpckvPC8

And for the record, Japanese games are more enjoyable in Japanese than translated. You can't think of it like a binary "translated vs. untranslated", because most older translated games are unplayable dogshit thanks to incompetent localizers like Working Designs or NISA, and many fan translations are equally incompetent. So there's more benefit to learning than you'd think, considering the sheer amount of Japanese vidya out there.

You should instead learn Japanese for learning Japanese.

This is like saying that fans of French cinema shouldn't learn French to watch more obscure French films that never got translated. Why is it that the topic of Japanese draws out this retarded attitude, where you need to justify self-learning the language with some higher cultural purpose?

I've found that vocabulary is the great filter for me. The grammatical structures are not as difficult as I was expecting but knowing them ammounts to nothing if I keep running into words I don't understand.

Pretty sure you can bruteforce vocabs. It's just like memorizing games' names and their cover art.
Those grammatical rules that switch the last part of the sentence/verbs like -shikanai and particles are much trickier IMO

What I meant is that it feels like a never ending task. No matter how many words I learn, new ones just keep popping up. Compared to grammar where it seems to be more manageable. That's not to say it's easy, I keep messing them up as well but doesn't feel as frustrating as with vocabulary.

Ehh, I mean that's just how it is for all languages though? You're bound to find unfamiliar words and terms the more you expand your reading materials like from Dr Seuss books and newspapers to Lord of the Rings and science journals or a whole dictionary. If you limit yourself to just watch/read simple stuff like Atashinchi and Sazaesan, I'm sure you can see "the end" of the vocab grind much sooner than later

Yeah, you're pretty much spot on, OP. English is the universal human language now, anything worth experiencing exists in English.

Isn't that the conditional? I know it was a joke but there was no conditional in the original sentence. I do find funny how you just add other words to verbs in order to conjugate.
