Sonic was never really a platformer. It was careening out of control and bouncing off shit. When it did slow down for platforming, it was inferior.
I'm not a tendie by any means, and I had a Genesis instead of a SNES, but I recognize that Sonic has always been shit, and the only people that like it are faggots and furries and autists.

We had a SEGA console when growing up, and when I played super Mario at my friends house I was disappointed as the game is no where near as fun to play and explore routes in the levels when compared to Sonic which was a far more interesting experience, both are still good games though, just sonic has personality while super Mario is ultra safe and bland

They’re not that difficult once you play them out for a bit, all old school platformers demanding total precision and a little memorisation, the biggest problem new players will have is thinking sonics speed means just scrolling very fast, which is fatal if you’re not careful

It's not even a competition. Mario world is a regression from Mario 3, reliant on gimmicks and with terrible level design. Sonic is far better with its pinball physics and elaborate tiered level designs.

Also, I'm samefagging (>>725118126 is me). Top is a clearer image that makes doing tricky jumps more comfortable. Bottom is a lot of visual clutter that doesn't matter because you barely stop to see anything. Even ring collecting is pointless if you're a score autist as long as you just hold on to a few and reclaim a couple when you get hit.

Super Mario World is the 4th Super Mario Bros game. Sonic & Knuckles is the 4th Sonic game, with S3&K being the full game (and if you could that as 3rd, then Mania is the 4th). Those are the proper comparisons.

Graphically? You gotta have minimal taste and only like mario world's aesthetics full of clashing styles between sprites and somewhat monotonous backgrounds (at least All-Stars gave cool parallax scrolling to some backgrounds)
Gameplay? Because mario world's controls and physics are super tight and responsive, way better than Sonic by a longshot, Sonic's entire appeal is learning the game to beat it fast, but going slow in sonic games is abominable as fuck. Mario games at least give you overworld shortcuts to blaze through the game. Apples to oranges really, but god damn if mario's oranges aren't tasty as fuck any time of the year
Music? I'll give this one to sonic, at least every zone had a different theme, smw only has like 4 level themes, smw castle mogs the entire sonic 1 ost for real, but 1 track alone that plays in exactly 13 levels isn't exactly winning competitions here,

Mario World is the better game, though, it has more refined gameplay, way, way more stages, and greater replay value. Mario's formula had already been perfected with Super Mario Bros. 3, while Sonic the Hedgehog (a good game as well) was SEGA's first Sonic attempt.

I miss the SEGA × Nintendo days, it's such a shame SEGA left the hardware business and Nintendo was forced out of the main console market and only make companion platforms / handhelds now to avoid competing with PlayStation and Xbox.

Super Mario World was a day one SNES release, and Sonic came a year later, when Sega had been making Megadrive games for two or three years already, to be fair.
The DKC games, and Yoshi's Island is where Nintendo's platformers really upped their game.

Mario has wider appeal because it's far easier to play optimally. Sonic expects you to learn the game and apply yourself to get good, which is basically kryptonite to the average gamer.

A level in Sonic is a series of loop-de-loops and pinball sections, with the odd jumps in areas made of 16x16 sets of tiles due to RAM & cartridge size requiring it for the size of those levels.

The entire premise of Sonic is that he goes fast and yet as soon as you finish Green Zone you get Marble Zone with slow and tedious platforming and verticality. The water maze and final factory levels are pretty bad too and the spring level has memorable music but I can't recall anything about the level design because you spend most of the time airborne.
I only ever bothered to finish Sonic 1 once when I was a kid. It's not fun and the music is nauseating.
