It has a few lore points that make VS make a bit more sense, and some esotaric language you can decipher. The story itself is pretty good and it's unironically the best entry level shmup. It's made more for fans of the genre though due to references to anime and other games.

When does the story start appearing? I'm only a couple levels in but with how the game presents itself I figured there would be cutscenes or starfox chatter.

Watch the intro cutscene. Then after stage 4 will be the next bit followed by environmental/ visual story telling at loop stage 3 assuming you're in mech mode a bit more after that, then you get a full cutscene/vn dialogue before the final boss, after that you need to sacrifice your save data and use the remaining lotus orbs you have left to see the ending cutscene/ do post boss stuff which is lore and exposition dumping then one final cutscene after.

Tldr just play the game. The main draws you will take away (assuming you're a VS fag) is why color is absent and censored in VS and who the mysterious visitor to the void lords is. Check the wiki for connections after you 100% the game

Good to know, thanks. I absolutely am a VS fag, I beat VS all the way through EX and got ZR afterward solely because I wanted more lore, but I shelved it because it just wasn't fun and I've been trying to find motivation to pick it back up.

I never even really thought about this. Is it somehow connected to the lotus jewel. Also, if I recall correctly god is also censored in that one dialogue with the nun, but I thought it was just the Void rejecting other lords

It looks like a really cool game so I don't feel bad for supporting it, and knowing how deep the VS rabbit hole went I'm sure ZR does some fun tricks despite me already knowing the big twist with your save file. Ironically, though, ZR made me realize that I simply don't enjoy shmup gameplay. I like dropping a quarter in one now and then to see how far I get, but grinding score and 1ccs just isn't my thing. Thank you for shedding a little light on ZR, I'm more encouraged to play it now.
