Polearms aren't great. They used to be totally ass, but the free DLC crossover with Hero's Adventure adds some decent tools to it, but it will still lag behind the stronger weapon types, and one of your party members has unique moves and equipment that make her a much better Polearm user than you will be.
Hidden Weapons are also somewhat underpowered, they get a really good Cultivation move off of a party member you get halfway through the game, but that's pretty much the last power bump it gets, and again, that party member who gives it to you also gets unique moves you can't learn, making him a better HW user.
Sabers are good, very strong early, lots of upgrades as you go, and a few strong end game options.
Swords are great, a bunch of moves and solid progression, and more unique gear than any other weapon. Clearly the "normal" path. Also has probably the strongest normal moveset in the game that you get very late which is clearly designed to beat the end game bosses, who can br pretty hard.
Fists are busted, easily the strongest weapon. You can get really strong moves really early, and the second strongest regular moveset like halfway through the game.
If you have the Eastern Sea DLC, it adds a fist and Hidden Weapon moveset, both are insanely busted.
On your second playthrough, you can pick a "Legacy" that gives you a boss moveset to start with, and they're all insane, far better than anything other than the DLC movesets, and they make whatever weapon type their for incredible..
