Its about enjoying the spectacle of an epic adventure story with cool characters. For combat focused games there are action games and shooters. It is okay to enjoy a video game for things other than just the gameplay.

For the time, yes. The gameplay feels outdated now but thats a product of its time. There is so much you can do with so little memory. But story is atemporal and it was so much better. Can't even compare FFXVI to any other previous FF, even FFXV which was the last one prior to it. Same goes for everything. Take Xeno series as an example. Xenosaga was a huge step down from XG, but still somewhat enjoyable. Xenoblade 2 and 3 were even worse (I liked XB1 better than xenosaga). Every souls after DaS feels like a shitpost where you don't know if its sarcastic or just retarded. I'm using franchises as examples because it better to compare each entry in time instead of between different ones.

I think I kind of get what you mean but /v/ also likes to shit on games or series they like as well. Its a part of the fun of discussing I guess. I enjoyed Bloodborne a lot and completely agree with all the hype for it I have seen on /v/ in the last 10 or so years. Its an example for me at least of /v/ getting it very right with the praise for a game.

But I don't really see Souls games as JRPG. They are Japanese action RPG but not the same thing as a turn based JRPG. It doesn't technically mean turn based or ATB style combat but that is what most will think when they see the letters JRPG.

This game is starts off okay, but I think it's severely lacking in many regards. The characters and story in these kind of games
is usually very important because you spend so much time with them through a long meaty game. They are rather grating here, even with the voice acting turned off, and suffer from the usual Japanese tropiness and women worshiping bullshit. The two females are very grating.
There's a beautiful watercolor painting aesthetic in the towns of the game, but unfortunately the dungeons are very bland and you spend a lot of time in them. They are actually less creative and distinct than the games they primarily take inspiration from. Oldman games like Final Fantasy IV.
The variety of enemies is also just not quite there, random encounters are very tame and you'll see the same three formations over and over whenever you go anywhere. There's nothing to much like rare encounters or events or superboss encounters to mix it up enough.
Over half the game's bosses are these kinda lame asterisk battles where you fight a human job holder for their job. I also don't remember any of the famous Final Fantasy setpieces, it's pretty much all dungeon crawling.

There's also a really obnoxious endgame which is where I quit playing, but I won't spoil it.

I tend to think of FPS as being old fashioned and outdated now. It's just too weightless. There's a lot of problems with it, but I actually thought when Helldivers II makes your diver have to actually bring their arms to bears in the direction they want to shoot, it was like a breath of fresh air. I no longer gain any satisfaction by clicking on heads.

What makes a JRPG is the shop. A shop is a callback to the d&d roots of a RPG where you bought equipment that you then used that equipment to slay monsters from the d&d beastiary™ in an epic adventure. It symbolizes the freedom you have in the game-you can walk to a shop. You can not walk to the shop and go somewhere else in the map instead. You can tell it's a JRPG from the moment you see a shop. If it lacks a shop, is it even a RPG? I begin to doubt it. It's now something else. A mere hallway storyboard simulator. The main problem with modern rpg's is forgetting the shop-while a decent one will still remember this facet of gaming in the root of rpg.

I think the game themselves feels like shitposts with Souls being like a parody of itself. Its a winning formula and every entry was fun despite whatever I may think of their flaws, so I don't blame them. For example, every entry has its blighttown. In and of itself it would be fine, cute even, but instead of trying to make it enjoyable it seems they try to make it as miserable as Blighttown in a very artificial way and always falling short.

I was 14 during the golden age of JRPGs.
Or perhaps the golden age of JRPGs was during the time most gamers were 12-16 years old.
My friend used to love JRPGs played the hell out of Final Fantasy, Tales, Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden, Breath of Fire suddenly didn't really like the genre when he got much older. Hated Persona, hated Trails, hated Fire Emblem, hated Bravely Default, hated Xenoblade. The only RPGs he played in the last 15 years was E33 and Balder's Gate 3.

That's the whole point, actually, these modern concerns are all women's issues. It's the kind of shit that ruins the mood at men's reunions, but they usually tolerate it because they like having women around. But in the case of entertainment, it just ruins the mood without any other benefit, lol.

I fucking hate how modern JRPGs almost entirely tend to be "military focused" (less about the character's agency and more about their sense of duty) or some modern high school/academy simulator. I miss classic "boy meets girl and goes on an adventure across the world" stories being the mainstream.

Short answer would be yes. Devs had more creative freedom and the will to experiment and try new things though if we are being fair a lot of the stuff they did were probably work around the technical limitations that existed at the time.

The pursuit of realism opposes the freedom of design so it´s a scourge.
