It was the best time for gaming, unironically.
People used to actually use teamchat to help each other know what was happening and strategize to win

It was fun looking back but at the time incredibly annoying. Going into MP lobbies and people were playing shitty music into the mic, eating loudly, had their fucking family yelling in the background or whatever. Always had to mute people back then or at least go into party chat so you can only hear your friends, that being said often times you'd get invited to parties full of retards like that if you were a good enough player (or were playing a team based mode like slayer or TDM).
Still it was fun because mostly everyone had a mic. 360 Elites came bundled with them. Quality of the mic was terrible.
As an idort in the late 2000s, playing on 360 and PS3 was a completely different experience. 360 lobbies were what you'd expect, but I hardly heard anyone use mics on PS3, it's more like how it is nowadays.

early 2005 was kino, late 2005/2006 was when modders figured out how to fuck around with matchmaking, they'd set it up so everyone spawned at the same place while they'd have guns that would autoaim with instant headshots, fucking gay when you'd join one of those games
(at one point there was like a 25% chance of each game being one of those)
got so bad I'd just play custom games, load up zombies gametype or tower of power and spam the recent players list with invites, could get a full game pretty quick

, you could just spam anyone on your friends list (which was usually huge because everyone just added everyone else on a whim) and there was a 90% chance your lobby would fill in less than a minute.

I was speaking comprehensively about the era. The 360 came out in 2005. I didn't even own a 360 until the Elite came out.
From my perspective, literally nothing changed in between those years, in fact it only got better. If you have something important to bring to the conversation, then go for it.

The OG Xbox was a dead console with shit games, I'm doing the Xbox a favor by only talking about the peak which was the 360. No one ever talks about game chat on OG Xbox because no one owned it. Everyone had a PS2.

If it wasn't for Halo, I wouldn't have any online friends today. The earliest people I came across were from Halo 2, and the other half from Halo 3. It was so sociable, if batshit, that even a stunted introvert could make friends.

fun and exciting would be the words to describe it. mind you I also played on PC, but for a console to go to the internet it was pretty cool. everyone had mics because the initial live time people bought came bundled with the mic. it had built in voice changers, so the old guys would use the child preset and kids would use the el anonimo deep voice for fun sometimes. lots of banter with randoms. foreigners would made fun of my accent but made some cool friends from my country.
I wonder where they are now... never bought a 360. shoutout to any finnish dudes from back then.

It was as console exclusive as all the Halo games are.
It was a timed exclusive. It just took a year to come out on other platforms instead of a generational Xbox assraping.

Our family had OG Xbox, PS2, 360, PS3, Dreamcast, Gamecube, asst. handhelds and a family PC. My Grandpa worked for Chevron though and is a very nice man. We shared everything with siblings and friends as we were raised by Catholics.
Xbox online > PS2 online without a doubt the atmosphere was just a lot more energetic and reactive on there.. more people talking and not as many college kids or sweats.

same is true moving from PS3/360, 360 online was better without a doubt.. PS3 had some classics like warhawk and uncharted 3 mp but 360 just had the better community again. both were the better syslink consoles and way more kids in my town had xboxes so we played a lot more halo 2 and 3. GC was the sleeper because of Mario Party and Double Dash, me and my friends also dabbled in a bit of Rogue Agent.. really miss those days.

you could actually use voice chat back in the day. it was basically the default way. because our countries weren't overrun with foreigners and leftists yet. these days, multiplayer games are extremely asocial by comparison. you might as well be playing with bots. but every game of halo 2 was a new experience, with new people.

i liked the hacked maps that had NPC's spawned in just standing around idle or with kill boundaries disabled.
always bothered me back then how Bungie went through all the effort of making something as cool as forge mode but still purposely made it extremely limited and didn't let people spawn NPC's or campaign locked vehicles like AA wraiths in.
