The active combat system isn't that interesting. The game only gets good once you open all the saled chests. Every 5 minutes some bullshit happens and it's not clear how or why it matters.

Zoomer here. I hated how braindead easy it is, how little strategy there is involved and how awful the writing is. The atmosphere isn't anything special either. Wizardry, Romancing SaGa 2, Vagrant Story and PST are all much better games, despite their flaws.

The combat is too easy. It gets boring after a while. They should rebalance the combat and add new moves for characters if they ever rerelease it again. Maybe add in a hard mode too. Also I wish it had party chat like the ds dragon quest games. I first played Chrono Trigger right after beating DQV so I remember thinking multiple times that certain moments would work really well with it.

It's a masterpiece because it's solid in every aspect, gameplay, story, music, pacing, etc. It's the perfect JRPG by this metric, but that doesn't require the story to be complex, the story just needs to be well written and engaging. Other RPGs have deeper stories, but they're often unbalanced, like amazing story with mediocre gameplay (like Planescape/Xenogears)

I'm actually playing through Chrono Trigger + right now, it's a pretty cool romhack. The promise of being able to explore 1999 AD 6 months before Lavos destroys everything really got me interested in it, but there's a ton of other features too. It made the game more difficult due to upping the level cap to 99, but spreading out the stat gains to compensate, so battles are a little harder. It's very interesting and worth a try.

Alot of cool sequence breaks too, like being able to go to 65,000,000 BC before going to the middle ages, or fighting the Son of Sun the moment you get to Zeal.

Golden Sun's main issue is that they talk too much without saying anything of substance. And in TLA i sometimes felt directionless or dreaded going back to the smith. I think Chrono Trigger is more impressive for 95 than Golden Sun was for 2001 but i'd also say that Golden Sun is the more fun game to play. In terms of difficulty, i'd say they're both a joke. The Djin system is just too strong for the enemies you face. Golden Sun has more interesting systems though. Chrono Trigger has more charm imo especially with Toriyama's art. I love puzzles and Psy Energy but the time gimmick is also cool especially if it's the first time you experience it in a game. I didn't play Chrono Cross yet but i'd hope they double down on the good while expanding on what was lacking.

This is the issue I think - JRPGs are more subjective than other genres because how much you like the art/music/story/characters is a bigger factor than other genres. Like everybody agrees Super Metroid is great, or Mario 3 is great, but basically every popular RPG has a subset of vocal critics.

Those games are all great (I haven't finished Golden Sun or DQ3 yet), but it's hard to say they're better than CT for any reason besides personal taste.

They don't. They don't "need" to appreciate anything. It just would be strange if they don't appreciate a beloved classic. But that's not the case, most zoomers enjoy it if they try it. Probably the most popular old RPG for young people to try, in fact. So it's a moot point.

We should be asking why zoomers don't appreciate Lufia II and Phantasy Star IV more. They'd love those too if they tried them.

Chrono Trigger since it strips everything down to its leanest and most well polished version its the best JRPG for people who don't actually like JRPGs, since they don't actually have to engage with any of the deeper aspects of a JRPG. Instead they can just skim along the surface on the genre doing cool things and say they played a JRPG by the end.

Can we not pretend that this game was a smash hit in the West when it came out and only later after FF Chronicles on PS1 and emulation throughout the 2000's did it gain appreciation? Because I remember seeing that game at Funcoland as a kid in 95 usually going for $120 used due to how many limited copies were made for it.
And nice generation war thread.

I'm 32 and I found it boring as shit whenever I payed it, literally FF6 but less interesting in every conceivable way. It's a good game for children who have never played an RPG before but liking it as an adult for any reason other than nostalgia is just embarrassing.
