I really don’t see how anyone could come to that conclusion.
It’s not that deep or interesting, it wishes it could be the vidya equivalent of Twin Peaks but never ever comes anywhere close.

Calling AW1 good is a bit of a stretch, it's on the better side of average. The gameplay is definitely lackluster but it's not like the story is anything amazing and it felt like it needed to be shaved down about a chapter's length. The best parts of the game were often references to other, better media like the Twilight Zone parodies or the scrambled Twin Peaks cast.
The Poet and the Muse is a great song, though

I played it and American Nightmare a two weeks before game dungeon dropped.
Ross felt just about the same way I did, some neat ideas but overall a very middling experience that gets put on a pedestal for some reason.

Greatly realized story that's neatly paced, it's very much like a Stephen Kings book that goes more and more meta towards the end. In fact it has lots of homages to horror movies and books.
Oh and before some gameplay-only snowflake barges in, AW has lots of combat, it's just not as engaging as the story and atmosphere.

Icelandic wit at full display.

I like the aiming system in Alan Wake. It's Resident Evil 4's beam aiming, but modernized. Sadly, the sequel ditched it.
Also, combat in American Nightmare is dramatically improved. They should have continued in that direction for the sequel instead of making a game completely divorced from the first.
