This is why I can't bring myself to play Telltale-esque games. At least Dispatch seems to have a bit more thought to the gameplay than just "Inspect this and this and this before putting them together", but I can't really commit to buying a game where most of my decisions are just picking a different flavor of snappy comeback.

the plot must proceed, but HOW it plays out is dependent on your choices. waterboy leaves you a box of donuts, and the type is dependent on what you chose as your favorite type in an earlier chapter. if you make fun of flambae's sunglasses, he isnt wearing them in a later chapter. its a minor detail, but it is tracked.

Yeah you're not wrong but Detroit:Become Human does exist, and that game ACTUALLY made a ton of shit branch off and change in real and significant ways based on what you choose to do. You could have stand still and wait 10 minutes until her owner gets home and he beats her to death essentially, no you're missing 1/3rd of the game. It's not the best thing to do but it is there and possible.

If Detroit didn't exist I would sympathize with Telltale games more but that retarded french bastard proved that you CAN make the deep type of choices matter game people want, so no more excuses for Telltale-likes imo.

detroit has a lot more branching differences that affect whether future choices even present themselves. it also has a lot of fail states. i would agree that it is certainly more robust than dispatch. dispatch is just a different style. its very streamlined/railroaded, without real branches or consequences. the choices DO matter, but only in how it presents the plot to you. its more cinematic than it is a game.

its a detail to HOW the plot plays out, not that it creates or denies "vital plot points". there are like 3 choices that reach "vital plot point" status: who you cut from the team, who you add to the team, who and how you romance. everything else is minor and only affects the presentation. does flambae lose his eyebrows or his tooth? does he wear his sunglasses still? what kind of donuts show up? how does the fight play out? we still go on roughly the same journey and end up at the same point, but the bumps and scenery can vary. its not a difficult concept.

In these types of games, they make these choices not matter by reducing the role of effected characters to near nothing. Thus, due to the ability to choose, Sonar/Coupe/Phenomaman/Waterboy's influence on the story gets minimized to cameos because they can't guarantee those characters will be there moving forward.

Some games manage to avoid this by having a huge scope and budget, but Dispatch has neither.

It's because everything aside from the dispatch missions are pre-rendered.
It's meant they've got great animation quality, but it greatly reduces the amount of variations they can actually do. Drop visual quality for some talking head scenes, and you can do more callbacks.
