Xenoblade games do not have big budgets at all, and paying salaries in the US is a way bigger expense than paying salaries in Japan. So even though this "rumor" is made up, Metroid Prime 4 Beyond certainly had a significantly bigger budget than Xenoblade X.

It's so jarring going from the mostly nice-looking main environments to these empty, largely bland open areas, to the point you wonder why Retro even bothered with this. It reminds me of SWSH of all games, going between the specifically designed towns and routes to the embarrassingly poor-looking Wild Area. Obviously Retro at least gave more of a damn than that, but it still doesn't look good.
