Im playing it for the first time, on chapter 12. does hard mode actually just mean normal? i beat fe6 on hard and this is stupid easy by comparison, even without rewinding. is it worth it to bump up to maddening or is it like 3H maddening where its not fun unless you plan the entire chapter ahead of time

Hard mode is fairly easy, but the main thing that makes the difference between hard and lunatic is losing the ability to break and deal effective damage to bosses. Most of the same general strats for each map will work in both hard and lunatic, but the real challenge is figuring out the bosses, especially early on.

You can skip 95% of it, or even mod the game to never have to interact with it in the slightest. It's not like 3H where you're practically forced to do it

Mika pikazo is a shit artist and the art for three houses and whatever God forsaken sequel they have going on is worse.
Just give me a fire emblem game with a male only MC and female units only with an appealing art style and I'll be fine.

yeah
Story and writing were bad but thats just the norm for FE nowadays since Awakening. Artstyle also sucks but thats also been a thing mostly since, well, awakening.
Gameplay's really good.
