its a reference to Aesop's Fable: "The Woodman and the Axe"
>
In this fable, a woodcutter accidentally drops his axe into a river. The god Mercury (or Hermes) appears and dives into the water, bringing up first a golden axe, then a silver axe. The honest woodcutter refuses both, saying they aren't his. Mercury then retrieves his original iron axe. Impressed by his honesty, Mercury rewards him with all three axes. The moral is about honesty being rewarded.
