We see it eat through metal and it melts through human clothing and flesh, there is probably some commonality between those things that would make sense.
It reminds me of my issue with replicants. In the P.K Dick novel they're actual androids but in Blade Runner they're basically some sort homonculi, appearing as living beings and indistinguishable from humans or other animals unless you look under a microscope and see bar codes and labels.
They're not clones, its even stated that their individual parts were designed piece by piece like an android, then in 49 there is the whole "It was impossible to have them reproduce until now" plot point which is ridiculous if they were derived from cloning since the sterility would be an artificial inhibitor.
Basically it's like they tried to make it so they're living things but not carbon based life forms, just their own unique artificial brand of life that resembles other living things but are distinct chemically and physically.
